Cube 20 Pint Dehumidifier for Basement, 1,500 Sq. Ft, Energy star

I've had one of these for two years now in a 900sqft garden apartment, and it has been doing great and saving me a ridiculous amount of energy and money on AC. I love garden apartments, but in my city they will easily get to 70%RH or more in summer, and even 72F at those levels is uncomfortable, never mind the mold risk and other problems. Central AC isn't made to keep up with that and it's way too expensive to use it to try. This dehumidifier keeps the humidity in my whole apartment at 50-55%, and at those levels I can set my thermostat to 78 during the day and be perfectly comfortable all day long, and my AC almost never runs except when I turn it down to 73 at bedtime. It also has a nice big tank, so instead of emptying daily, I empty every few days before it gets much more than half full, and if I leave for a weekend I know it'll be fine. It's also very easy to clean, which is super important with humidity devices. Every time I empty the tank I put in two drops of dish soap in and wash the inside with a paper towel, and I don't rinse, I just leave the residual soap to kill flies and prevent growth. Every few times I rinse it out and add more soap. And the coarse air filters are easy too, just bang them outside, rinse them, give a hasty dry with the paper towel you're about to use on the tank and they're good to go. No fine air filters, but also no disposable filters to replace. It's not obnoxious even on high, but I have it right next to my dinner table so when I have company I turn it to low and it's easily ignored. This would not be an ideal unit if you know you're going to run a line to drain it, I'd get a more compact one without the huge tank for that. But if you plan to use the tank, it's a no-brainer, buy this dehumidifier. I have no complaints at all.

We needed a dehumidifier in our small, 500 square-foot basement. This Midea unit was top rated for small spaces by multiple reliable reviewers, like The Wirecutter. Set up of the unit and its associated smart phone app was easy, and it quickly reduced the humidity levels in our basement to a more comfortable level. The fan is quiet. Since we don't have a drain in our basement floor, we use the Midea bucket to collect the water, which means we have to lift the unit off of its bucket each time we want to draiin the bucket - a bit inconvenient, but by no means a show-stopper. (We use the water from the bucket to water our garden.)

I had really high hopes for this thing after seeing it highly recommended by Wirecutter. Their reviews have not steered me wrong in the past. However, the compressor completely died in less than a week. It was functioning quite slowly at first, taking a long time to get humidity down and not really capturing all that much water. After 3 days of intermittent use, the compressor gave up. Humidity was rising in our apartment as it was running. I realized it was blowing cool air and we could no longer hear the buzz of the compressor, so back to Amazon it goes. I was looking forward to the ability to monitor humidity control remotely without having to go look at the unit, but unfortunately the app is not very useful. The first troubles occurred with app linking, where for about an hour it was refusing to connect to my wifi network. Once it did, I realized this was much more a novelty than a helpful feature as the app is full of bugs (recognized as the wrong model and wouldn't display water level estimates, then once I manually changed it, it showed the estimates but still failed to update over time). There were several occassions during the few days which I was using this unit for where I launched the app and their servers appeared to be down. It would not connect to the device. Why even offer this if it's not going to work? It's a shame it's a shoddy piece of equipment. The design is quite clever. However I've switched to another brand's dehumidifier (and a "dumb" one at that with no app to avoid any extraneous tech issues), and within hours of plugging it in, it is FAR more efficient than this unit.

Update: the unit I bought in October iced over and died in December. BUT, when I contacted Midea customer service, they replied the same day, asking for several additional pieces of information. Within 3 days they informed me they will reimburse me for the unit. I'm hoping the problem was a fluke, and ordered another one, as I really do like they way they operate. Midea customer service was 5-star in dealing with my complaint - a rare wonder these days. This is my second Midea Cube 20 dehumidifier. First one lasted 3 years, then refused to condense water. Motor and fan ran, but no result. Internet said probably the coolant, and that it was toast. Other reports said generally most people expected a dehumidifier like this to last 2 years. Mine runs constantly, and I empty once a day. This is fairly quiet, which is good, because it needs to be in my bedroom. Consumer Reports praised this model as being one of the quieter units. Chose the 20 because internet articles said getting a bigger dehumidifier may cause to cycle more often, which is harder on the system than continuous operation. Also, I have to carry the bucket to the bathroom to empty. Water is heavy. I can set the water level turn-off to something lower than max capacity so it's easier to carry. I have mine set on 3 (out of 4). Having a larger capacity container would not be useful for me. I can set it to run continuously, have a set point humidity shut off, or set it on a timer. I have it set to 50% humidity, and in FL, that means it usually runs continuously. Only problem is a design issue. Controls are on the top of the unit and easy to push. One of my cats will sometimes sit on top of the dehumidifier and reset it for me, and I have to go back and reset, which fortunately is not hard. Oh, cats! I find the compact size, ability to dehumidify, and easy controls of this product very good, and did buy another when the first one gave up.

We live in southeast Texas, and our apartment has been extremely humid nearly year-round. The humidity as tracked by our smart thermostat stayed in the upper fifties, lower sixties. Since setting this up it only gets that high after a particularly long hot shower. I'd estimate it took less than 30 minutes for the humidity to go from 62 percent to 52 percent. If you have the right set up, you can have it drain continuously, but we don't have that so we have to physically dump the water out. The app allows us to set it to shut off after a couple of gallons (the bucket holds four gallons total) to make it easier to do so. As it comes with wheels, we just roll it to one of the bathrooms and dump it down the tub drain. I like that I can change the settings at will in the app and monitor the fullness of the bucket so I can make sure it doesn't cut off during the night or when we're away. As to how it sounds, I have some hearing loss and was a bit surprised to find out our small air purifier was louder than I thought after sitting my air pods as hearing aids. I can "hear" this without them, so I've assumed it's on the loud side. At least to me. I don't care though. The low humidity is worth the noise. All in all, it's a game changer for us. Our apartment is actually comfortable for the first time. Hopefully this lasts for a long time.

I am SO thrilled with this dehumidifier! (Odd to say that about an appliance?) Short story - We have a basement office, and when the AC unit in the garage leaked, it saturated the wall and carpet in part of the office. We had an OLD dehumidifier, which was tiny and very hard to clean, which did the job for the first “flood,” but within a week, the old one malfunctioned and ended up reflooding the office carpet and pad! Thankfully, we had already ordered this one (again, the old one it was so small and got moldy so easily), we set this up immediately. Set up was ridiculously simple (we aren’t using a drain), and it pulled so much water out so quickly! The capacity of this Midea Cube made a huge difference in how intently we had to monitor and physically interact with the mess. Within a couple of days (using the dehumidifier and fans), everything was dry again! And even so, it continues to pull enough moisture out that we are emptying it every two days. (We do have it set on a lower capacity so I can lift it and dump it in the sink/outside, but we do have the option of letting it fill higher and longer!) and I am THRILLED with the open bucket so it will be easier to clean. (The old one was NAAAAASTY.) It is very effective at handling basement moisture, it got rid of both the wet carpet and general humid basement stink, and I love the ability to change the emptying volume. Pictures: currently working (41 reading)… opened up to see capacity (this code shows when it’s open and we set it on the floor to empty the bucket)… the setup as it was finishing out drying up the floor/carpet/baseboard area.

Consumer Reports, Good Housekeeping, and others gave the Midea Cube Dehumidifier a high rating. Based on those reports I decided to replace my old dehumidifier with the 1500 cu ft version. I liked a lot about it. The style is more compact. The air intake is on 3 sides and return goes out the top. I think that's a very good design. The bucket is large but if using the drain hose option, it provides a good base to boost the unit up. The water collection bucket has its own handle and once the top unit is lifted off using its handle, the bucket can be lifted with its own handle to be emptied. I use the drain hose option so I can't speak to how quickly the bucket fills. The wheels work well if you opt to attach them. There is an app that I use with it so I can monitor it and change settings. It is no quieter or louder than my previous 2 dehumidifiers. I've had 3 power outages and this unit restarts at the same settings when the power was restored. My old units did NOT do that. As to the disappointments now. Directions were confusing to me and I actually watched their online video that was super simple. They should likewise simplify their printed directions. The unit can be used 3 different ways. They should organize the directions to address each configuration as a separate topic. This unit is located in my basement. It replaced a dehumidifier of a different brand that worked well for 5 years and simply stopped working this year. Likely a compressor issue. The Midea is a 1,500 Sq ft unit so I thought it was more than enough to keep my basement clear of mold, mildew and dampness. This little guy chugs constantly but is never able to get the humidity to the 40% setting I chose. The lowest it has gotten to was 45% but usually tops out at 49% humidity. It's acceptable but I am disappointed that even though it is supposed to be rated for use in basements and can handle 1,500 Sq ft, it doesn't do as good a job as my old unit. My basement is 1,400 Sq ft but about 1/3 is closed off. Even so this unit can't bring the humidity to the percentage I set. I really wanted to love this unit but I can't. I don't understand how it dazzled the testers at Consumer Reports and others. I'm going to purchase another dehumidifier for my basement and return the Midea. I can't reconcile purchasing the next size up at 3,500 Sq ft for more than twice the price when there are much more affordable options. I believe I'll end up purchasing the brand that I had previously. Sometimes it's the devil you know, right. All this said, I can't give this a hearty recommendation for basement use. However, it may be more suited for use in a single room but that would likely require regular trips to empty the bucket. I took off one star because it's misleading to say this is good for basement use. Replacing my Bionaire PureQuiet unit which was sadly discontinued. The Midea does a good job but a little cumbersome removing the top section to empty the large bucket but the large bucket also means less times having to empty it. The noise level was important to me and is actually very acceptable. All in all it's a great unit and well worth the price. An update. I'm well into my first summer with this unit and it's actually much better than I had expected. I've had many dehumidifiers over the years but none would compare to this one. I'd give it an A+ if I could! Another update. The only issue I have are the filters, which are pretty fragile. I broke one portion of the frame trying to install it. Best to be very gentle when handling them. I managed to glue it together and we'll see how long it lasts. A replacement is around C$9 and C$14 shipping. An update. Thse second filter is now broken on the plastic edging, even after being very careful and gentle with it. This is after 18 months of use. So it's probably better to fabricate some kind of filter and mount it on the outside of the casing. I'm not impressed at all. As a de-humidifier it's great. The design not so much.
