Holding the Priesthood
Robert Miilet's book explores what it means for a priesthood holder to take seriously the responsibility to act in the name of Christ. "This short book is about the priesthood and about the men who are called to hold it. It is intended to awaken us, to nudge our consciences, to educate our desires, to call us to higher ground, and to provoke us to glimpse and grasp the power with which we have been endowed." He proceeds with stories, quotes, and scriptural references in hand.Millet argues that a conviction of the truth is necessary, but only a starting point. We must act to further the divine plan. It begins with service to others: "When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren." (Luke 22:32) We must put aside things that, while not unimportant, are of lesser importance than our family responsibilities and our devotion to God. Sometimes financial gain and other desirable achievements must be "put on the altar" and sacrificed for more important ends.We need to realize the power we can draw on beyond ourselves. One of life hardest lessons for many of us is that we cannot do many things well by ourselves. "Our omnipotent, omniscient, and omni-loving God can do far more with our lives than we can." We should also understand the combined effectiveness of each member of the Church performing his or her calling to the best of their ability, supporting and strengthening one another. Millet presents convincing arguments that we should acknowledge and cooperate with the good works done by members of other faiths. We are not alone in our desire and ability to accomplish part of Jesus Christ's mission. The most important aspect of exercising the priesthood is to understand the work that Jesus Christ was about and further it. This includes serving others and inviting them to growth and greater happiness. "We must pay particular attention to how Jesus treated people... They felt warm and welcome when in his presence." We should not deliberately give offense and strive even harder not to take offense. These actions and attitudes prepare priesthood holders to act in God's name with seriousness and right intent.I read this book based on John Bytheway's recommendation in Behind Every Good Man . As promised, it talks to men about the appropriate ways to influence others, as Bytheway does to women in his own book. There are some very good messages and insights in this book about marshaling our own strengths and appreciating those of others. In a few places it does seem to over-pander to a stereotypically male reader. It doesn't descend into football stories, or backslapping, or anything so blatant. But it does, for example, assume men will want to be "known" for being a priesthood holder in the same way one associates with one's college or professional sports team. I'm glad there isn't very much of this sort of thing. I recommend it as worthy reading for priesthood holders.

Absolutely great book. You will be very happy youb ought it and read it.
This is by far one of my favorite books (along with The Infinite Atonement). Simply put, it is a motivational kick in the pants to rise up and become the men that God would really have us be. It is motivating and inspiring without relying on guilt at all.I have enjoyed this book so much that I bought 15 copies to give to friends, family and other people at church. I gave one copy to my Stake President who loved it so much that he has re-read it twice now and tells me with great enthusiasm every time he sees me how much he has enjoyed it. I believe every Priesthood holder would do well to read this book. It is well written and easy to read.

Great purchase for the price
Purchased Men of Valor, Men of influence and Men of Covenant. All three appear to have good binding and substance as far as value for the price. I have not read but have purchased as a gift. Seem to be a nice product without actually reading them.

Inspiring and Spiritually Uplifting
The most inspiring and spiritually uplifting book I have read. I have read it at least 12 times, and it deserves constant reflection. A must have if you are serious about improving your spirituality and understanding your purpose as a priesthood holder.

Excellent Book
This book is an excellent book for realizing the impact you can have on the people around you for good. My husband used it in a study group with other men to read and discuss how to implement the subjects Dr. Millet wrote about.
