Q: How big of a mat do I need for a fire pit that’s 20 inches in diameter?

I would say the bigger the better, especially on a wood deck, but may depend on space as well as how close you want to sit. I bought the 38" for a 25" pit to use as a border for which my grandson shouldn't cross (it sits on concrete). I am pleased with the product as embers have not burned it at all.

Q: Can this be cut to surround a stone fire pit?

My husband said you could probably cut it, but it’s very thick so you’d need heavy duty scissors. Otherwise, we really don’t know. But it does protect our wood deck under our fire pit.

Q: Wkill this heat shield kill the grass where you put it?

The grass underneath it, will get brown. Not sure if it is just the shield or from the heat. I put mine away the day after using it since it is not that big of a deal. I have a feeling the grass under will be dead if left for long periods
