Practical and simple
I bought this, very afraid because of the reviews I've seen online, but so far I am loving it! It is very easy to use and the best part is you can add your own books to it! It is very simple, no touch screen, but it has a color screen. For the price it is a good ereader, if you want something simple and just to read. I think it does it's job very well

Not so much
I was given a shift3 Ereader as a birthday gift about ten months ago. I didn't see the benefits to electronic books before the gift. It was great. I loved the concept and was soon reading about a book a week (books thru Kobo). The design of a thumbnail type scroll and menu buttons difficult to get used to and is cumbersome. However, I persevered having nothing to compare it to. Recently it would not always respond to power up. Eventually, when it would begin to power up it would show just a bright screen with broad across- the-screen stripes. Foolishly, I ordered another as I had become used to the units peculiarities and all of the good things, including price ( but not the stripes, of course). Bad move!!! Within 3 weeks of receipt of the new unit, the same pattern of the striped screen began, anew. Unrelated, Amazon asked me to respond with my experience with the recent experience ( -customer satisfaction surveys) . I related pretty much what I have written here. Within the second day of my survey completion I received an email from the third party vendor, expressing their "sincere apology" for my bad product experience and instructions for the return for refund. I am in the process of returning the devise. So kudos to Amazon for reaching out with the customer survey and their immediate relaying of my bad product experience-(2x) and the quick follow-up by the third party vendor to the complaint. A zero goes to the product itself. I am researching other competitive products. So far I am leaning toward the Kindle Fire.

Pleased then disappointed.
I received this for Christmas. I was very excited because it was in color, lightweight, and included a case. I had no problems setting it up and going to the kobo store, etc. My whole ideas was to use it to download ebooks from the library. I followed all the directions on how to do it, but no matter how hard I tried, my computer would not recognize the device. This in turn made the adobe digital not recognize the lookbook so I was unable to download from libraries. This was very upsetting to me because I do not have the money to purchase books. Unfortunately for this reason I have to return it. If there was a way to get it recognized I would definately keep this.

The Facts of the what you won't like-Period
I find this e-reader acceptable for the price I paid, but I can't forgive the fact that I can't use my sd card to expand memory & the weak battery charge. I bought a sd card to use with my lookbook but it didn't work. That's how I found out it only takes standard sd cards. In addition, the lookbook does not even have an offical website, only a customer service #. I had to go to a random forum just to get updated software. The bookstore is also expensive.

A good little e-reader
E-reader arrived in an attractive box, and with an attractive carrying case. On opening I was impressed with just how nice it looked. Yes it is made of plastic, but has a good solid feel and weight to it.After charging it, it was time to turn it on.Took a minuet to turn on, but after it was on I was impressed with the screen clarity and colours, they are sharp and bright. The initial browser was as buggy as anything and had serious trouble with it, but reading reviews I knew that it required updates, and for that it needed to connect to the internet. This is where I ran into the first (and only) problem I have had so far with the reader. It could find my wireless network with no trouble, but my network is password protected, and no matter how many times I entered the password it would never connect. In the end I had to put my network to unsecure before it would connect to the internet and download the updates.Once the two updates were done, the on board software had no more bugs in it, and it would connect to the store easily. Brought my first book from the Kobo bookstore and waited for the download. before I knew it, it had finished downloading. Now a note about the Kobo bookstore, it has lots and lots of books, but there are a few titles missing. No problem however because if you can find them elsewhere, you can install them on the reader just by dragging and dropping onto the readers drive.I was very happy with the books already on the e-reader as well, in fact I was very impressed with the 25 books that came pre-installed. I was expecting the normal "free" books, which are short, missing pages/diagrams etc, or are the books that no-one wants to read (things like pride and prejudice). What I found however was a very well thought out selection of books, with everything from the US Constitution through Alice in Wonderland, Dracula and Shakespeare. Now some people have said that they were not impressed because it does not come with a browser, email, video capabilities, music player etc. To those people I would say, this is NOT a tablet PC, it is an e-reader, and what it does, it does very very well.

I wish I could select no stars.
When I first saw that this device originally retailed for over $100, I was in disbelief. Who in the world would pay over $100 for this paper weight? I'm so happy for all the people that love theirs. But OH MY GOSH it was nothing but a headache for me. It was over a month ago that I dealt with it and I'm still mad. I spent about 6 hours trying an combination of operations to make it work. Nothing worked. I couldn't use the keypad. I couldn't connect USB. I couldn't upload books. Then I couldn't delete books. When I couldn't complete a factory reset, I gave up and returned it. After referring to all the help websites for this product, I've came to the conclusion that this device is crap. I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy.
