Chinotto is a type of carbonated soft drink produced from the juice of the fruit of the myrtle-leaved orange tree (Citrus myrtifolia). The beverage is dark in color. Its appearance is similar to that of cola, but it is not as sweet as cola, having rather a bittersweet taste. Chinotto soda dates back to the 1950s and is produced in Italy by several companies. The Chin8Neri (the Chinotto with the "8") was the first Chinotto in history. Its first appearance was in 1949, after the war, when the Neri factory, a manufacturer of water coming from the Capranica (Viterbo, not far from Rome) establishment, put on market this new drink from the curious "bittersweet" taste. The Chinotto is a soft drink made from the juice of the fruit of Citrus myrtifolia (called precisely bitter orange) and other plant extracts or flavors. Dark drink in appearance (similar to Coca-Cola and Pepsi), but the chinotto has a more bitter taste. This makes it a very special drink that made a lot of fans.

This is too much like cola and not enough like chinotto!

The Best Chinotto!
Chinotto Neri is the best-tasting brand of Chinotto in my opinion; Chinotto is an italian soda that is rather idescribable - it is "citrus flavored" but tastes more like a herbal tonic, bittersweet, refreshing, with Campari and Angostura Bitters flavor notes. You either love it or hate it, but I have been looking for the Neri brand since I had it in Rome. Pretty much impossible to find here (the San Pellegrino chinotto is available in some supermarkets, though). While the price does seem high, remember you pay as much or more for a fountain soda at a movie theater (which is mostly ice)!
