What is the travel/extended length?

The struts total length is 10.5 inches. From pivot point to pivot point is 9 5/8 inches. The strut travel is 3.5 inches. Which results in a collapsed total length of 7 inches. Hope it helps

Are European style hinges required?

I don't think it requires a specific hinge type. Just be sure the size and weight of the door is appropriate for the strut strength.

Mine will not budge. It seems like this is a common problem. For those of you without problems, were you able to compress them by hand?

It is normal for them to seem hard to compress. Since the tip is small, the 25 pounds to move them seems to be too much. However, mine function perfectly when applied under the load of a closing door.

Will these work on a 6 inch tall door? If not, any suggestions?

Size is too big for a tiny door. You will not have space for full extension or even the closed size. The force in these struts is too much for a very lightweight little door. Try a smaller size. Additionally, the attachment legs parts may be bigger than space allows for mounting.
