I currently have a Model 53 which keeps on dying every 3-5 years. Can I replace it with this one (although the flow is more than 2x)?

Theres a ton of variables here. The reason it may be burning up is because it is under/oversized pump for the application, and/or the float switch is not working properly. To answer your question you'll need to study up on how to properly size a pump. This depends on many factors including the cycle timing, how many feet of head it's discharging, the size of the discharge pipe, and amp draw.

How can you mount a float switch to this unit?

Very easy to do, use a hose clamp on the discharge pipe.

Brand new pump, I have to shake the discharge pipe to get it to start pumping. Is that normal for a brand new pump? On a 20amp circut.

Did you position the pump correctly? Sounds like the switch that turns the pump on automatically maybe binding against something and can't float freely.
