packed with methods
Modern texts in ODEs are typically an assortment of a few tricks for certain common cases, followed by transform methods. For this reason I always caution my students that they are getting only a glimpse of the subject. Meanwhile, Murphy's thorough text of 1960 contains something like 3 to 5 times as many methods and topics in part one of the book, about 220 pages! The book is undiluted (not "dumbed down") but flows smoothly. It would inspire a motivated student who would soon be showing the instructor some new tricks.
