Interesting insight to a part of military history that is almost forgotten. While the western european dynasties picked fights with each other over empire building, the gates to europe from the south were guarded by the Hungarian Kings, their subjects, and peoples of the balkans. There are some fascinating stories told here. Many of which are truely fantastic in the telling, but real history no doubt. Great to dip in to and pick out individual stories rather than a comprehensive history. But that is something I prefer in this case.

I found this a most interesting book tells you a lot about unknown Hungarian history in English for the first time well worth reading

Gabor is an amazing writer! His books in English fill a huge void in the history of Europe between the XIVth and XIXth centuries. The resistance of central and south Eastern European people to Turkish invasion led by the hungarian and polish kingdoms led to the preservation of Christian and free world. Current information on the subject does not even mention it, giving all the credit to the Habsburg and the French, who’s greed and local rivalries nearly caused the destruction of the greatest civilization created in human history. Please read his books and spread the news about him!

I am still reading this book and I really learned a lot from it. The language a bit cumbersome, shows that it was not written by a native English speaker. It would have been better to use a different font for the text as it is a bit to small for this reader.But it is an enjoyable reading with plenty of good and interesting information. I easily recommend it for those interested in history of medieval Hungary.
