I'm a UK citizen and having lived in Turkey for almost a quarter of a century am very familiar with the original Turkish language versionof this wonderful novel. I can't describe how well thought out the story is, the patriarch of the family is upright and honest and prides himself on how he brings his family up with his own strong values. Then he retires and goes with his family to live in his native Istanbul and due to their belief in everyone being as honest and true as themselves they fall down one by one as they all are struck by unsavoury events brought about by dodgy streetwise characters...this story tells of the falling down of this family one by one as if leaves from a tree...so the story begins...I found the translation to the English language to be ineffectual in the depth of the words which W.D. Halsey selected. If only he had given the sentences better meaning the book would be more true to it's Turkish language original. I would give the original 10 stars but this one just 1 star because it leaves the reader confused.

Excellent novel.
I had only seen one chapter on the web, and I wanted to know the plot, so I bought the novel. It was wonderful. I had never read anything by Resat Nuri Güntekin, and I really think I have found an excellent author.
