You will need to initially pry open the box by inserting small screwdriver into key holes to get lid open. inside is plastic bag with rods, keys, and key bypass inserts. no instructions. once you set up the baits in the vertical bars you close the lid and it locks. to open you use the key. if you want to allow opening without key you push the two inserts unto the key receiving port one from each end of port, so they clasp each other. these inserts now are attached to the station and become the key that always stays with station. nice option to have if there is no possibility of children. i bought because it has the internal block for weight so it does not move due to wind.

This heavyweight bait station is the standard that commercial companies deploy. Perfect for barns and out buildings. I already had a key so not problem for me to open but Yeah I understand all the negative reviews simply because the keys are taped inside and not so easy to pull out the rat hole. Tomcat is a great dinner for Rats maybe the company will eventually post on their website instructions on how to bypass the lock, install the posts, care and feeding of the station.

This is a GREAT BAIT STATION!! I tip the station on it's side and reach into the mouse entrance to get the small plastic bag taped inside with the key, the bait posts, & the bypass inserts. You may have to use a pair of needle nose pliers to reach in if you have large hands. I have used these for years at our camp and they work perfectly! I ordered 2 more for my new shed. I keep my key in a safe place and check the bait often. This is a great product!!

I purchased 2 units plus 2 pails of bait. They shipped it together and when I received it one of the hinges on the unit was broken during delivery. Since you have these heavy pales you need to ship separately from units. Since I don't need them to be child proof so it is fine for my location in a commercial warehouse.( See photo above ) To open the unit, you need 2 screw drivers to go up through the bottom of the unit were the connection hook between the top and bottom is in the middle of the unit to push the double tab back and lift. Make sure screw drivers are all the way up and pull both towards you while you lift the top portion off.
