Vintage Challenger Battery Operated Road Racing Set

I bought this locally on clearance for my 6 year old son. I grew up with Tyco slot cars in the early 80s, and this seems a step down from what I remember. The construction was pretty straight forward and it looks nice. Unfortunately it feels rather low quality, the plastic track is brittle, the pieces don't fit together well, and out of the box it caused a lot of frustration. The biggest issues were the track pieces kept separating, the cars flipped off the curves too easily and the mechanical lever lap counters were so tight they would usually cause the cars to crash and fly off the track instead. Also the railings and support legs fall off and the cheap controller wires were completely kinked and impossible to straighten. Finally it uses 3 C batteries which aren't exactly common place anymore. It was looking like a disaster... Anyway, that night I spent about 2 hours trying to improve it. This isn't the kind of track you'd want to take apart and put together a lot, so I glued all the track pieces and railings together with B-7000. I straightened the wires with a heat gun, and opened up the counters and ground the pivots and lubricated them so they would turn easier. Then finally I opened up the cars and glued in some 3 gram sinkers right over the front pins. That kept them on the track much better and now the track. Now it actually works pretty well. Though I don't think most people will want to go through the extra work, nor should they. I paid about twelve dollars for this on clearance. For that it was an acceptable deal, though I wouldn't spend much more.
