My table is 40 inches and there is a 12 inch overhang.

Agree, I don't think you'd have enough of a drop. Check online for recommended size round tablecloths for the size table you have. For example, I looked up a chart that says for 54" table 81" tablecloth for short drop (meaning what hangs over the edge) and 90" tablecloth for half drop (meaning half way to the floor).

Yes, it is woven synthetic fabric so moisture is absorbed.
