Great Spotting Scope At a Great Price!
My experience using spotting scopes is limited (sub-$100) but I do own or have used higher-end rifle optics, such as Athlon, Bushnell, Barska, Nikon and EOTech. So I believe have an idea of what good glass looks like. I recently upgraded to this Kenko 16-48x65mm angled spotting scope since I don't find the need to spend $1,000+ for a top-tier spotting scope that I would only use mainly for zeroing in optics when I am at the shooting range. This spotting scope fits the bill in terms of price, overall build quality and value.PROS: It features a rotating eyecup so you can use it with or without eyeglasses for proper eye relief. Also, there is a built-in sunshade that you can pull out to prevent glare, especially on sunny days at high magnification. The scope definitely has a good, durable feel and weight to it. When I have first used the scope when viewing trees or targets at a distance, it is very clear with little distortion and no image defects. I was quite surprised at the image quality considering this is a spotting scope on the "cheaper" side of the price spectrum. The fine and coarse focusing mechanisms rotate smoothly with no grittiness or bumps in its movement. I hope Kenko one day makes a higher magnification spotting scope such as a 20-60x85mm or similar and I would definitely consider purchasing something like that too.CONS: I think Kenko dropped the ball on the carry pouch and tripod mount. The carry pouch is just a basic nylon carry bag, but should've come with a padded one to provide an extra level of protection when transporting it. Also, there is no slot or dedicated area to hold the tripod because it literally won't fit inside the carry pouch, mounted or unmounted. This was a design fail in my opinion. The tripod does the job, but feels a little cheap and would recommend getting a sturdier one. The scope itself is decently hefty and may be a little top heavy when it is on the tripod. I haven't used the phone mount, but seems of fairly decent quality. Nothing to write home about.Overall, I would definitely recommend getting this scope, especially if you are new and don't want to spend an an arm and a leg for a really high-quality one. This spotting scope punches well above it weight class and gives other brands a run for their money. If Kenko had provided a nice, padded carry pouch and a good-quality tripod, this product would receive 5* for overall build quality and value.
