Q: Is the mesh size really 3/8" because looking at the zoomed image the size appears to be 3/4"

i couldn't give you an exact size, its pretty small, but it streches a lot. we no longer use it. we had otters eating our fish and they were able to rip right through the net so it didn't work :(

Q: I am concerned about birds getting tangled. Is this net more rigid than regular garden netting?

Not sure what regular garden netting is, but I use this netting to cover two ponds and beyond and never had a bird get caught in or around either of them.

Q: Can this net be cut without having it unravel? I need this small mesh to keep out live oak leaves, but the 14 x 14 is too small for my pond.

You didn't say what size you DO need so it is hard to give you an answer! The 28 x 28 is obviously too big for your pond, just like two 28 x 28 nets are too big for my pond, as I only need 1 whole one and 1/2 of the 2nd one.This netting doesn't unravel -- it UNFOLDS and it is folded in a very weird way. So you are going to have to unfold it to its full 28' x 28' size on your lawn and then cut it to the desired size (very easy to cut with a scissors). Keep the remainder that you are NOT using for the next year (and then order the remainder that you do need next year - I can't tell what you do need next year as you never stated the size of your pond. I've done this for years, and I can help you.
