Good filter
Probably my favorite filter ive used as far as filtration goes, like it more than the aquaclear. Think it be best compatible with larger fish. The skimmer has taken in some of my baby crayfish. I tried covering it but it started making noise. Other than that its been super quiet. I Like the customizable basket. I like that its a full basket unlike the AC. Instalation is was easy. Like the self priming which the AC doesn't have. Wish it came with a pre filter sponge. My crayfish produce a lot of waste and the filter is able to keep up, even full of sludge it keeps working so id say its highly durable.

Quietest Filter, Great performance!
Powerful filter for my 29 gallon and quiet too! It has this low buzzing at higher levels but you can lower it so that goes away. The build could be better quality though, the emperor pro 450 which is my old filter has a thicker and stronger plastic and this one feels softer so it may not necessarily last as long. The durability in that way seems rather low and prone to scratching although I think that this piece is more function and customization over form, it is simple in a good way and not over-engineered. The size is excellent! Far smaller and fits the same needs in power to my old emperor pro 450, I highly recommend for a 29 gallon over the tidal 35 since it is adjustable. Ease of cleaning? This is the easiest filter to clean! It has a clip you push away and you can take the whole media basket out and click it into the filter top so water does not go everywhere when you are moving it to a bucket with tank water. Great filter! I highly recommend.

High quality and QUIET, Large media capacity, adjustable
These filters are top of the line. I have a 75 gallon tank with a Tidal 55 and a Tidal 75. The filters are virtually silent compared to most HOB filters. It glides effortlessly over the back and comes with an adjustable pin to ensure its level against many types of tank brands and sizes. The media capacity is like nothing else with plenty of room for multiple sponges and matrix to fit. It has an adjustable intake to virtually almost any level. For what you spend on this product you will get what you pay for. This blows tetra brand out if the water (no pun intended). The Tidals are reliable and long lasting products. The next step up would be canister filters in my opinion.

Quiet, easy to clean, keeps my aquarium water crystal clear
About 5 months ago I decided to get back into tropical fish after almost 40 years. I still had the tank, but threw everything else out since so much time had passed I was sure everything was “new and improved “. I wasn’t wrong. I didn’t know what was good and what wasn’t so I relied on my LFS. I had a 20G but bought a 15G with a divider so I could have a couple bettas. My LFS sold me an Aquaclear 20 for the 20G and a Tidal 35 for the 15G. My 20G is a guppy tank with 15 guppies, a few nerite snails, and some cherry shrimp, so it’s not overloaded. My 2 bettas have a few nerite snails as well. I do 25 percent water changes every 4 days. The Aquaclear died after 2 months and I stupidly bought another one, but I wasn’t happy with the water clarity. I also have a sponge filter in the 20G. The water in my betta tank is crystal clear. The junk floating around in my 20G was driving me crazy, and I couldn’t believe the ditrius I was sucking up with my vacuum. These are guppies, not big fish! Then it occurred to me it might be the filter, so I replaced the Aquaclear 20 with a Tidal 55. Now, to be fair, the Tidal 55 is rated for a 55gallon tank and I’m using it in a 20G, but the Tidal 35 doesn’t have an intake tube, and my 20G is tall, so I opted for the Tidal 55 that does have an intake tube. Now my water in the 20G is crystal clear, just like my betta tank. No more stuff floating around in the water. It’s extremely easy to clean, it’s so quiet you don’t notice it at all. I live in the woods, no neighbors, no traffic, so I don’t have any “white noise” drowning out the filter noise. There really is no filter noise. The other nice thing about this filter is you can control the flow, so even though it’s a HOB, you can adjust it so you can have little or a lot of flow, which makes my bettas happy, since they like calm, still water. Another feature is a blue nob that pops up telling you it’s time to clean your filter, although regular water changes make this unnecessary. I’m getting ready to set up a 55G, and I bought a tidal 70 for that tank. I’m beginning to think that not only is the brand important, but the size as well. Going up a size can only help keep your water cleaner than with a lower power filter. I’m really happy with the Tidal filter, I won’t use another brand. I think my fish are happier too.

Great other than intake tube being too long
The flow adjustment works great on this. I am using it on a 40 gallon breeder saltwater reef aquarium. I love that it's not too strong for my corals. My only issue is that the intake tube was too long. It went all the way down into the sandbed. And because it is tapered, I couldn't trim it. I had to leave part of the tube off and put a sponge over the end to keep fish out of it.

Works Great
HOB filters can range from excellent to cheap dimestore garbage. The Seachem Tidal series are among the best. Very similar design to those from Fluval and AquaClear, and also made by the same manufacturer as far as I'm aware. The main difference is this one has a fully submersed pump so there is no need for priming. It self primes and starts perfectly every single time. That was the main feature that sold this to me over others I had used in the past. Great water flow with decent adjustment both on the inlet and the output side of the filter. It otherwise follows a similar layout to AquaClear AC series filters with a removable media basket. Sponge on the bottom, chemical filtration in the middle, bio filtration on top. In this case they don't include any chemical filtration. Just a sponge and a bag of Seachem Matrix. This is fine for 99% of uses. There is room in there for a pre-packed bag of Seachem Purigen as well which is what I generally use. This was really easy to set up and only took a few minutes to assemble. I washed it with hot water and rinsed it with cycled tank water before installing. It is really well made and everything fits together nicely. All chunky plastic parts with no apparent weak spots to break when servicing. I really like the included heater clip which fits my Eheim Jager heater nicely. More reliable over time than suction cups. Instead of a pre-filter sponge I bought a 3D printed intake cover for it which reduced the size of the holes to 2mm. This keeps most of the plant debris and baby snails out of my filter. Also, because I am using it in combination with a sponge to overfilter a 29 gallon planted tank, I bought a 3D printed output baffle to make the flow smoother and more gentle. Both of these items works great and make it more suitable for my needs. I can run it at max output with great filtration and very gentle flow. There's not much else to say. This is about as good as HOB filters get.

Probably great in some circumstances, serious problems for most.
I purchased this pump thinking I will improve filtering in my kit tank, that the filter it came with, was not adequate for fish load and planted environment. Purchased this 55 gallon unit as way oversized with intention to run it at minimum flow in my 20 gallon. The idea of much larger media container was attractive and the smaller unit does not have long reach for tall tank. My confidence was also increased by all the amazing reviews and excited youtubers. Problem 1) As many other reviews stated. The media it comes with is not adequate and single sponge does not do enough mechanical filtering. No problem, there is plenty space to add more. The moment you add something more fine the filter starts bypassing the cartridge, since I have I have gotten larger unit than I needed and I calculated that to turn water around 10 times an hour I need to run the filter as low as 20%. This stopped bypass problem but created another ... Problem 2) The filter has 3 intakes ! you hear a lot about questionable skimmer but there is actually 3rd one under the pump motor itself. So now that I have to run the filter at 20% capacity in order to prevent overflow. I'm dividing suction power across 3 intakes. With my cloudy tank with particles flying everywhere after few days I noticed that I literally see stuff go right by bottom intake and not get sucked. I guess the top skimmer helped by gravity takes priority if the filter is turned down. What I had to do to improve situation. - Drill more holes in the white bottom media basket to allow more free flow into media container. - Removed the baby blue wheel all together and blocked that space with a piece of plastic to block mid point intake. - Blocked 90% of skimmer intake with a black piece of plastic cut out from food safe container. - Probably not needed for regular not tall tank, but I also took the intake tube from old cheapo pump and replaced the intake making much longer reach that has much better sized gaps distributed over larger area. As result I seen mechanical filtration clean up tank in literally 2 hours total. While I'm not an expert on hang on filters, I would most certainly not recommend this product that is raved to be top line unit, that is also priced at the very top.

The new top HOB filter
One of my local pet shops just replaced all of their AquaClear filters with these. So I decided to try out a 55 tidal just to see for myself. I'm running one Tidal 55, Aquaclear 50, and an Aquaclear 20, on my 75gal aquarium. Definitely a large improvement compared to the Aquaclear 50. A larger media compartment without larger outer dimensions. Greater water flow, and a lot quieter pump. The water outflow is lower in the tank too. Allowing you to have lower tank water levels. The intake is variable in length, and can be removed if you only want to surface skim. The filter primes every startup. Unlike the aquaclear filters. Which sometimes don't prime, even when full of water. The motor was a little noisy when I first installed the filter. But has become completely silent after a week of operation. It measures in at 32db average. Whereas my aquaclear 50 measures at 43db. The black plastic blends in nicely with a black aquarium background. But the bright blue dials stand out in the tank. If they were also black in color, it would definitely look better. Another minor downside is that the surface skimmer cannot be fully disabled. It's always drawing a little bit of water. This could be a problem if you have lots of duckweed. As the plant can be sucked into the filter, clogging the foam quickly. Overall, it seems to be the new top HOB filter. Same cost as an Aquaclear. With greater media capacity, quieter operation, greater water flow, and reliable self-priming.
