How long do the pads last?

That is 100% dependant on your driving. If you drive with 2 feet and drag the brake, no brake will last long. If you brake really hard, you'll wear them out faster than if you don't. But rear brake pads should easily last 70K miles. Probably plus minus 50% depending on driving. I bought my A6 with 112K miles on it, and a 183K miles they are still fine. But I drive softly.

Is this for both sides calipers or only one side (two brake pads)?

It is either a full front set of brake pads or a full set of rear brake pads. Make sure you are purchasing the correct set you desire to change out. In our case I purchased both a front and rear set. The sizes of the pads will be different, as the caliper sizes are different front to back.
