I want to buy two of these to run in stereo with an apple tv (airplay 2). is that possible and can i use my apple remote to control the volume?

Airplay 2 let’s you play sound through any and all of your speakers with Apple TV (and iPhone, etc). Should work the same as my Sonos speakers that have airplay 2

Does it have a battery?

No battery. Not a ‘portable’ speaker. Needs to be plugged in.

Can I rename the speaker? I want to use two mono speakers in two locations on same network.

If I understand your question you want rename the speaker but it clearly states that it doesn’t have a microphone so it’s app driven not voice.

One review stated that you need Alexa for the speaker to work. Is this true?

Negative. I don't let her anywhere near my house and mine work fine. I don't use voice control for anything in my house though so if you're asking if you need Alexa to USE voice control then I don't know. Once I set them up on my phone with the Edifier app they just pop up as an audio option in my music streaming apps like any other bluetooth or wifi speaker. The speakers are great. I have a pair in the main room, one in the kitchen, and one in the office. Highly recommend.
