Outstanding! Makes it easy to overcome your fears and excel
This little hardback is incredibly easy to read. Extremely well organized, it's written in clear, jargon-free language. Each of its many lessons covers just a few pages, and is composed of short, straight-to-the-point paragraphs. Sized to fit easily in the side pocket of a laptop case, it's an ideal way to kill time at an airport gate, on a flight, or even during those dead half-hours that often pop up between convention sessions.Better still, this book really delivers on its promise. Practice its advice and you will become an effective public speaker. Author Tim Koegel ("KAY gull") covers a wide range of verbal and nonverbal topics, from how to avoid using "verbal graffiti" (such as the dreadful "to be honest with you") to how to have good posture. The book is organized around what, at first glance, seems like a corny conceit. Koegel claims that an exceptional presenter is one who can "OPEN UP and own the room." Why does he put "OPEN UP" in all caps? Because that's the author's self-invented acronym that refers to six characteristics Koegel feels all great presenters share -- they're Organized, Passionate, Engaging and Natural speakers who Understand their audiences and routinely Practice their presentation skills. The book then devotes a full chapter to each of these traits. Each chapter is filled with useful tips. The one on being passionate has two dozen!A section on what to do with your hands is especially helpful. Illustrated with 27 simple line drawings, the advice gets quite specific. For example, when the author discusses which hand gestures are best to emphasize comparisons, he writes that you should mimic the information as it would appear on a slide: "Dollar amounts, percentages and revenue are typically depicted using vertical bar charts. Therefore, perform these gestures vertically. Use horizontal gestures to demonstrate timelines, phases or stages of a project and chronological sequences."You'll also learn how to illustrate dates and numbers, where to put your hands when you're just standing there, what to do with them if you're sitting at a table, even how to hold visual aids.Additional chapters help you prepare your own introductions, conduct question-and-answer sessions and, my favorite, control your nervous energy. The back of the book has a series of worksheets to use to help you practice your skills, prepare and grade your performances and even judge television "presenters" such as debating politicians and the guests who are interviewed on "60 Minutes."As an author and small business owner, I've had to make face-to-face proposals, host trade show booths, meet with reporters, do book-signings and speak in front of many groups. And I know what it's like to be nervous: just before my first trade show I had such an anxiety attack I had to lay down behind my display's backdrop! If you're like that, this book is the perfect antidote to calm those fears. Its advice is so easy to follow, and so easy to practice, it can help you not only get through these situations, but actually excel at doing them..

Great book for those than need to be in front of people
I'm in front of groups for a living and for those that are either uncomfortable with that thought or just not experienced this is a great book. It is full of solid advice on how to be a more confident and effective presenter. If you have to get in front of groups for business get this. Regardless of your skill level or experience a good review at a minimum. Add this one to the library and refer to it often.John Gregory Vincent[...]"Turnover Terminator"The "cure" for the common workplace

A practical, real-world guidebook
This is a short, readable, down-to-earth guidebook to improving oral communication in a business context. The author's purpose is in the title-- The Exceptional Presenter-- and everything in the book is directed toward that purpose. The advice ranges from how to stand in front of your audience and gesture without feeling awkward to how to deal with challenges during question/answer sessions. Every tip is a short, easily digested block, and the tone is just right. He focuses on one point: Public speaking can be very stressful, and a lot can go wrong during a presentation; however, some thought about the structure of the presentation and some work on the mechanics of presentation can lower that stress and give the presenter a much greater chance of success. He stresses one principle above all others: Preparation and practice are critical. Public speaking is a skill that, like all other skills, requires practice.I'm a former college debater and high school debate coach, and I'm currently an active member of Toastmasters. I know quite a bit about public speaking, but I learned some things from this book. It's a practical, well-written guidebook that will almost certainly reward anyone who reads it.

Excellent Read! Short, relevant, powerful!
I read this on a flight to a business meeting, where i was to give my sales pitch to a very large audience. I was a little nervous about doing so, as i did not know the product all that well (Just started at the company), but new the presentation as i had practiced a lot.I picked up on the verbal graffiti immediately, as i suffer a great deal from this during my more nervous pitches. I especially liked the body language portion of the book, it appears ALL of my natural body language was geared toward making either myself or the audience uncomfortable!I highly recommend you read this book if you are in the presenting space, be in one on one sales pitches, to large conference type engagements. You will gain valuable tips, and those who are more experienced in the field of presenting, will garner a great refresher course. All in all, thank you to the author, Mr. Koegel. Highly recommended read.

Exceptional is More Than a Word in the Title
Whether you're a seasoned speaker, or are just starting out and need an edge in today's competitive market, this book is for you. It's like having your own professional coach at your fingertips. Both a quick read and a quick reference, the techniques are simple and easy to apply. The skills you will learn are critical to improving your communication in a group setting or one-on-one.Prior to reading this book, I had the privilege of speaking to 1500 business professionals at a national convention that taped my presentation. I had received outstanding feedback from those running the convention and invited guests. Yesterday, I reviewed the CD and listened for verbal grafitti, pacing, tone, inflection and anything that would make the message less impactful. I found several areas where I excelled and others I could work on to make this presentation exceptional. You won't regret investing in this book. Carry it with you and use it often. I highly recommend it.
