Sequel to Journey to Topaz. A child's view of a shameful episode in American history. The heroine and her family are returning to life in California after being sent to a detention camp in the desert. The father's business is gone. The anti-Jap feelings are still running high. The author lived this experience and puts it into a form children can understand.

An amazing follow up to journey to topaz
An amazing follow up to journey to topaz. The story takes places after Yuki leaves the camp, and eventually goes back home to Berkeley. Sadlly, things are not how Yuki expected, and I feel this book is sadder than the first.

I enjoyed this book-it kept me wanting to read more
I enjoyed this book-it kept me wanting to read more. I will use it in my 4th grade classroom. I liked the way we saw what was happening from Yuki's point of view. The writing was descriptive and engaging and I began to care about these characters. I liked that it did not show all people as prejudiced against the Japanese during this difficult time. It also explored some of the reasons and meanings behind peoples actions and feelings. This was meaningful journey to take with the main character Yuki.

A Journey in America's Shame
The author is a Japanese American who has written an historical fictional account of a Japanese American family's life during and World War II. Uchida explores the difficult yet often shameful chapter in American history. During World War II, Japanese families were sent to internment camps. While the Japanese American internment camps were bad, they nowhere compared to the concentration camps in Europe where millions died. Yet Japanese Americans were wrongfully displaced, discriminated, and mistreated during the war. This book chronicles one Japanese family misplaced from Berkeley, California to Utah. The book focuses on their readjustment and return to Berkeley. Things don't alway go according to plan as seen through the main character's view. Still there is plenty to hope and to not forget the past history. Yuki and her family adjusts but still faces cruelty, abuse, and discrimination for being Japanese. Her brother Ken is serving the United States during the war. Yuki worries about her father who had owned his grocery store. Yuki is a likable girl and relatable to young female readers. This book will enlighten and entertain readers as well. It is not all gloom and doom.

Best book ever!
Journey HomeJourney home is a great book so I would give this book 5 star because it shows you how yuki feels about going to camp.Yuki number is 13453 I feel bad for yuki family because they had to goCamp.Ch.15 yuki brother ken left with out telling anyoneKen was in the war.I wonder how it felt to be in a camp? Journey HomeThis book A Journey Home,is about a girl named Yuki and how she goes through in her life and struggles.Yuki and Yuki's friend Emi just think thy are ordinary and happy girls,I'm sad to say that's not true, every hour it seems like bad luck that has to do with, death, fires, broken bones, and WAR!The reason why I give this book a 4 star is because some parts are really boring, the author really does not need to put some parts in the book. But the other parts in the book were amazing and juicy.it makes the other books I have read boring!Enjoy,!

Touched my heart
This is a well written story about a Japanese American family and the hardships they encounter as they assimulate back into mainstream America from internment camps. I especially liked the story about Ken's return from the 442 regiment and the feelings he had about the war. This story explains the viewpoint from all sides, I think. The hatred and fear from some, and the caring and support from others. You will be touched by this story.
