Teton 45L Scout Internal Frame Backpack for Hiking, Camping, Backpacking, Travel, Rain Cover Included, Evergreen

General info: I am 5'2", 115lbs, 32E bust size. I just bought this pack, and after my initial inspection, it's awesome. I bought the hunter green version, and I like it. The green doesn't seem to be as 'bright' as the picture; a nice, neutral color. Why do I like this pack so much?? $$$ (!) -- I was looking at a slightly larger $200 pack from REI that got worse reviews than this pack did. Great value for the money spent. It feels really solid, and it's comfortable for me. If you are a larger, taller person, you could probably carry a bigger pack, but this size is fantastic for my needs. My dog has his own hiking pack from Ruffwear, so he can carry his own food, toys, and blanket anyway :P Super Adjustable -- there are straps everywhere. You can adjust the shoulder straps to fit your torso length. With a little finagling, I was able to move the chest strap up so it sits comfortably above my chest, removing the issue of being squished in a most awkward fashion. I had no idea when I read the description, but you can even take out the aluminum stays (the actual frame) and *carefully* bend them to fit the contour of your back. Awesome! I wouldn't plan on attempting this alone, and I will probably only do it if I find that I might be able to make it more comfortable. seems pretty good to me so far. There are little straps and and external pockets everywhere! I have some collapsible water bottles with carabiners that go really well on it. I haven't gotten my new sleeping back yet, but I will update as to whether or not it will fit in the designated pouch. If it doesn't, I think I could squish my pillow or a jacket into that pocket and use the 2 long outer straps to attach the sleeping bag. I doubt it could fit a rectangle sleeping bag ever, or a 0F mummy bag, but it may be able to fit a 20F compressed mummy bag. Again, if not, the outer straps most certainly will. As for the bag being good for a carry on, totally! You will have to be careful with how you pack it, but you could do it. It also depends on the airline. They all are so confusing with their different rules, but my old wheeled carry on was wider than the frame on this pack. I will update my review of the pack as I get some practical use in during travelling and camping. I should be going camping a few times in the coming months. Yay (!) California weather (: At some point I'll be flying home for a holiday, so I will be another guinea pig with that. ______________________________ Update #1: My sleeping bag fit in the designated compartment with a little extra room to spare! I could probably shove a book and some socks in there. However, there's no way it would have fit without the compression sack it came with. For reference, my sleeping bag is the "Ledge Sports FeatherLite +20F" mummy bag. I'll be camping in Northern California (winter = 45F at night), so it works for all seasons for me. If you need to use a 0F bag, unless it's a really expensive, specially designed compression bag, it probably won't fit inside this pack's designated compartment. You could fit it in the main compartment, though, and put some other stuff in the bottom section.

Used it to hike 15 miles across 6 peaks in Acadia, 5 miles one day and 10 miles the next. It was great! 55L was probably too big for this trip but I bought it with intentions to use it on longer backpacking trips later on. I got a 3L water bladder (which I used all of and ran out by the end) and I'd say that's a good size to use with this pack. I had plenty of space for everything I needed (in this case, 3L bladder, .65L filter bladder, lots of snacks, spare trail runners/boots, first aid, head lamp, some tp) and even stored all of my camping gear comfortably, though I didn't bring that on the hike. It's decently comfortable. I'm a skinny guy so I think it's more of a me problem but certain parts did start to dig in after a while. The frame kept all that weight nice and tight, it didn't feel heavy at all. I was actually running a little bit even at the end of my longer trip. Everything was also easy to access without rearranging the whole pack

This is my 3rd backpack, the first being about half the price of this one off of ebay (55L) and the other one being more of a day pack. Of course, the first one was due to buying everything I needed at once and trying to skip out on some of the costs (like tent, which is another story). The quality of this one is incredible. Durable, rugged, tight and thick buckles, thick straps, good framing and cushioning where you need/want it. Seasoned and thru-hikers will have their own preferences and may not even give this one a glance, but being on my first hike w/ a 50lb pack already (had to carry the bulk since it was w/ my child), I can tell you that the comfort this will bring in the adjustments and padding placements alone will be astounding. Not to mention the overall material, which seems like it can be put through some hell. I didn't realize that the separate pouch on the bottom was meant to be a sleeping bag compartment until I started reading some more. I whipped this baby out and thought, "this pouch will be perfect for fuel, stove and food equipment!" To me, those are the number one things I hated to mix w/ other stuff. My sleeping bag is in a compression sack so it doesn't take much space inside the pack and I have more than enough room for anything else I want to stuff within and on the outside w/ all the cords, carabiner holes, zippers and pockets. Outside of that, the other 2 things that people complain about (other than height, which is s/thing you need to research on your own if your out of the "average" realm) are the mesh pockets on the side for Naglene bottles and where the water pouch should be. The water pouch is where it's always been - from my experience. I've never dealt w/ sloshing around (your pack is too big and you haven't filled it properly) or even feeling it on my back. I wish the compartment was more form fitting for one, but I already know I can stuff more items on either side of it, making the entire pocket perfect for use. (Think socks, undies and other soft stuff - or your dirty clothes.) As far as the water bottles (Naglene) themselves - I prefer collapsible bottles, myself. I can hang them anywhere to adjust the weight as needed and I don't want or need a separate pocket for them. Plus, that's less weight. If you buy them (solid bottles, Naglene) b/c they're good at standing upright when you fill them or filter water into them, then I can tell you that there are a multitude of the collapsible options that can do the same w/ a minimal filtration system (i.e. a small one w/ a short hose... when you're filtering from a creek and it's very rocky and you think your 'bottle' is going to fall over, it doesn't). I will be back to update this in June, after my first long haul w/ this pack. So for now, I will leave it at a 4 star b/c I'm extremely happy w/ the price and the purchase.

I wish there were some places at the very bottom of the bag so I could lash a cord or whatever attachment through (to attach a tent, sleeping pad, etc) and not have it bounce around. I'm sure the loops are useful for hiking axes or some such thing, but I'd prefer to have a way to not have something flip-flopping around back there. In other words, I'd like a little more reinforced bottom with some possibilities for such a thing, even if it added up to half a pound. ON THE OTHER HAND: I love the hunter green version. Great for camouflage but also has a great attached bright yellow rain fly that you can cover your entire pack with. This will help in emergencies, even if you had to cut it off for a flag, whatever. I like the top-loading aspect with the very secure extra-gusseted closure that closes underneath the toggle.. Great feature. What I would have liked, also, is something I have in a Kelty pack I bought once: The top portion of that Kelty bag came loose entirely and you could use it as a shoulder bag or fanny/waist pack. It seems like a waste to not have that feature now as it was so useful. I really like the separate sleeping bag compartment, though there are some gaps where the zipper doesn't go around completely. If you lose some gear, you may have to remove the sleeping bag or whatever and check to see if it didn't sleep down into that compartment. The pros on that feature are that it's easy to get to that without pulling everything out of the pack, or you have a separate compartment for whatever gear you need to get at more easily. Granted you have to take the pack off, but it's a nice option. I'd recommend using a contractor bag or trash bag, etc, to line the bottom of the top section so gear doesn't fall through into the sleeping bag compartment. The fabric looks to be of good lasting quality and nicely water resistent, though I haven't field tested this yet. Though I'm not used to the idea of having to have to take the aluminum slats out, having a friend help adjust them to the curve of my back, I can see that this can be a great feature. My gripe on that is that, though it'll be a great option, the labels give no directions on how to line those things up to your back when you bend them. Not interested in spending a lot of time experimenting with that once the pack's loaded and I find that it's just not the right fit (yet). Overall, I give this 5 stars. The price is wonderful and for a person my size (5'6"), it holds the optimal amount of liters/inches of gear and will be versatile enough to play with. It's a great price, and that is very important to me. Not all of us can afford to go it with something from Marmot or whatever, but that doesn't mean we should walk around in pain or with a leaky, ripping, junky bag. A nice medium!

This pack has thousands of 5-star reviews for a reason. PROS: It is well-built, has great storage capacity, and looks great. All of the pockets, straps, and shock cord make it easy to hold a lot of gear in a tight, compact way so you don't have to dig through the main compartment for everything. The torso-adjustable straps help hold the weight in a really effective and balanced way. I haul about 30 pounds of gear in it and the weight distribution works very well. Everything in the picture I added fits in or on the pack with decent room to spare for food or more gear. CONS: The sleeping bag compartment is smaller than I would like. I was able to squeeze a 9x16 standard sleeping bag into it, but it took some wrestling to get it in, and was impossible to remove without unzipping the internal shelf to take it out through the top of the pack. I suggest an ultralight sleeping bag that will roll down to 8" or less because it will encroach on the main compartment. Teton Sports has some good ultralight bags that will fit well. The two side pockets will hold standard 3.5" Nalgene bottles, but it's a VERY tight squeeze to get them in and will take some strong effort. Teton should also go back to a zipper for the rain cover instead of velcro. BOTTOM LINE: This is a fantastic pack at a fantastic price and will serve you well in the back country. The cons weren't enough to keep me from giving an overall 5-stars.

Took this backpack on a hiking trip and it performed well . It’s very comfortable even when fully loaded, and the internal frame gives great support on longer trails. Plenty of space for gear, water, and essentials without feeling bulky. The quality feels durable and built to last. Great value for hiking—highly recommend!

I’ve taken this bad boy all over the world with me. My least fav thing about it is the adjustable part cause it wobbles a little. Otherwise this bag is amazing. Lots of hidden features. The best surprise was traveling through Koh Sok National Park while it poured on us and discovering from other travelers the hidden rain jacket for the bag. It’s really sturdy, simple color, the material is great. Worth every penny

To start, I'm 6'1" 185 lbs and bought this pack for me for the purpose of 2-3-day back country camping trips with 5-10 mile backpack hikes through mountainous terrain, which I've been doing regularly for the past 25 years or so. I'm a bit of a minimalist, so no fancy propane stoves, lanterns, or the like for me, and i was hopeful this pack -with its advertised smaller size- might be a good fit my purposes as most packs of mine end up with a lot of empty space I don't use. I was pleased with the look out of the box. Zippers and seams appear strong, intelligent design with plenty of pouches and places to tie stuff, such as my cooking pot, on the outside. It took a little figuring to sort the straps for my height and get the waist belt resting on my hips instead of cinched around my guts. Although I manged it in a totally satisfactory way, ideally, I may be a little tall for the pack and would imagine it'd fit better if I were a few inches shorter. As far as it's size vs my wide shouldered average adult male frame, it fits wonderfully with no indication of being too small to affect mobility or add extra joint pain at the end of 5-10 mile walk through rugged terrain than any other pack would. My one struggle with the pack was attempting to fit my 10-degree mummy bag (an average adult bag you'd pay $60 for at a store) in it's stuff sack into the bottom sleeping bag compartment. There's simply no way I was gonna fit it in, and i even tried taking it out of the stuff sack to try and stuff it in the compartment alone. No go. Thankfully, the sleeping bag compartment has an internal zipper that can be opened to allow it to be joined with the main pack compartment, which i did and simply stuffed my bag and stuff sack in from the top of the main compartment with no struggle and no discomfort upon putting it on my back and walking down my road a bit. However, after adding my tent to its proper place on the outside bottom and throwing a small tarp in the pack, the space remaining is not great. Because I'm a minimalist, generally needing only plenty of socks, a hoodie, and maybe a set of thermals, I'll be fine having enough space for 3 days food and my remaining gear. I pack my water off my belt loops, so i haven't looked at the water bladder and don't intend to. So, to summarize, I wanted to write this review for anyone who might be looking at this pack for similar stuff that I do. It's price and quality are solid. And it will suit my situation wonderfully. If you want to pack a 10-piece orchestra and your entire wardrobe and stay gone for 7 days, you may want to consider something larger. Once I've gotten some use out of it, I'll hand this pack down to my 5'8" 120 lbs daughter, whom it will fit wonderfully, and buy one a bit bigger for me. Quite likely my new one will be Teton as well based on the winning balance of price vs quality of this of this pack. 4 stars is the best I can give without having spent more time punishing it outdoors. Update: I've now taken this pack on 4 trips, which included a number of miles off trail bushwhacking through brush, climbing over deadfall, and scaling rocks. The pack is handling it all fine with no signs of failure. I've used the rainfly in action and can confirm it's well designed and does its job. Over these four trips, I've become more sure that this pack is not suitable for my 6'1" height (however, i've made it work with no discomfort and only minor annoyance), so i just received Teton's Hiker 3700 today for me and gave this pack to my shorter daughter. Ratings change to 5 well deserved stars.

So I’m coming back for a review after having this bag for a year now and I must say it’s probably the best bag I have ever bought. It’s had very tough material that makes it great for bushwhacking, you have no worries about rips or tears. It has an extremely comfortable fit with a variety of length and height adjustments and the most comfortable shoulder straps I’ve ever had on a bag. All zippers are very well built and never get caught up in the material of the bag and all pouches and pockets are ver generously spacious. There are only a few cons, one being it’s a little on the heavy side, weighing a little over 5lb it’s definitely not a ultra light bag. Another being the rain cover is cheaply made, it’s not fully water proof so I wouldn’t depend on it not getting the bag wet in heavy rain. I’ve had water soak through a few times so I would be advised to keep your electronics deep in the bag if you’re going to be in heavy rain (the bag has never fully soaked through even in heavy down pours) Hey a bag coming with a rain cover for 85$ is a steal of a deal so I can look past that. Lastly the interior of the bag is a bit of a tight fit at first, after a few uses the material expands a bit but still it’s not as spacious as it looks on the outside, but the bag also makes up for that in pocket and compartment size. So if you’re looking for a rough and tough bag for deep woods bushwalking or something that you can throw around on rough terrain look no further this is the perfect bag!

This is the second one we have bought in a year. The only reason it hasn't gotten a five star is because I really wish there was a phone or snack pack in the wiste belt. The adjustable back makes the fit awesome. It's fits bulky light items like the Teton adult sleeping bag, sleep mat, as well as clothes' food' hydration bladder and hammock with tarp. Affordable (if you wait for prime days or price drop). I love the adjustable back which can go super short or tall for fullsize adult female body. Means I don't have to invest is more than one child sized camping pack. Even weighing them for my kids for proper packing weight means they can help carry things without discomfort or being overburdened and I didn't have to pay double to get into ultralight packing. Love this so much

I'v got about 25# in it so far. Even a fullsize axe fits nicely close to the body for efficient weight bearing. I think even though it has great storage options, I might still want a belt to carry the "need to carry" things. You can safely overpack if needed; it has some decent ways to "dangle" pots & pans etc. Sleeping roll goes on last and is not utilizing precious space. Good elastic cord for last minute items like a jacket on the outside.
