Compact installation
UPDATED 23JUN2015 - Reduced my rating down to 3 stars due to the flimsy construction of the connector. The metal portion of the connector is not well seated in the plastic housing. Mine was used to power a dash camera in my car. I put a windshield sun-shield in every day - it's a mylar type thing. The act of putting it in and taking it out put a little stress on the connector and it broke the power connection to the metal portion of the plug. The entire plug ended up falling out as it was barely held in. Poor construction, though it would perform great in an application where you don't have to unplug it often or don't subject the plug to any remote type of stress. END UPDATEUsed to hard-wire a dash camera in my car. The wire from the 12v connection to the transformer is pretty short, but the wire from the transformer to the USB plug is quite long. The transformer is small, so it's easy to cram into a corner in your car and keep it out of the way. It's been working for me without problem, I'm very happy with it.

Versatile and length works if you route it well
I bought this to power a car camera, but it will work for any 5v mini(most all new smartphones and devices switched to MICRO-USB so be careful) USB device. The amperage I believe is 1.2amps.Most cars should have enough room around the fuse box to tuck the converter box in and if you are trying to wire something longer (by soldering longer wire on the 1 foot of cable from the converter) it should fit in most car's A-Pillar or mountable on car ceilings and/or dashboards.I started out trying to install this at my car's fusebox, (using an add-a-fuse tap that you see "Bought along" with on Amazon's recommendations) but my car's fusebox ground was a big bolt behind my car's dashboard molding. I wasn't about to remove all that to be able to tap into that ground and I could not find any easily accessible ground wires to tap into. Given that I looked to my car's rearview mirror as a power source. I know that is 12V because I already use a spade adapter to power my radar detector. I was able to use some Radio Shack power taps and spade connections to connect the positive and negative wires. It works! You have to have this product grounded to get the charging cycle to start so it is a must to ground properly. Thanks!!

Quality
Ordered this to power my DOD LS430W dash cam. Initially tried a home brew linear 12V/5V regulator I had built a long time ago but the 7805 got way way to hot even with a heatsink. Oh well, ordered this for around $13 and it works great. Build quality looks nice, and the wire ends were even stripped and tinned already. Just had to put an inline fuse on it and connect it to switched 12v in the cab (I tapped into 12v in my overhead console, worked out nice).Great solution that will save you time. Hopefully it works great for a long time.

Works great but could be longer..
Using this to power my dash camera. Hard wired to my battery so I can leave on when parked in sketchy areas. I had to add a few extra feet of wire however for it to reach where i wanted to go. Could have made it longer IMO...

Used this to hard-wire a New Mini 0801 Original Ambarella A2S60 Chip 5M pixel CMOS Car DVR Recorder + High Resolution Full HD 1080P 30 FPS, OV2710 + G-sensor License Plate + 135 Degree Wide Angle View into my car. I ran it into the 12v lines for my mirror and put the rest of the cable under the headliner. The cable really needed to be longer for my purposes, but considering this particular one is meant for a motorcycle that's my own issue, not a product fault.

Short comings!!!
This item could be a 4-5 star but it's too short I have a 2008 f150 and my fuse panel (hard wired) is on the passenger side down low I had to add about a foot of wire to get it to reach the panel. The dash cam (spy-Tec) hardwiring kit was about 2 feet longer for my wife's Porsche Cayenne slightly narrower but just as long if not longer of a windshield. I'm sure it would work on a smart car or a mini cooper just fine.

Good product, used to hook my dash cam to my fuse box in conjunction with Littelfuse FHA200BP ATO Add-A-Circuit Kit The length was more than enough for my purpose. (fuse box on drivers side kick panel, up the A pillar, through the headlining, to the mirror(4ft))Plus I've had this installed for 3 months now and have had 0 issues.

Not for Dash Cameras
Product looks well made and worked, BUT...if you intend to use it for a dash cam, forget it. The cable from the power supply to the connector is so short it wouldn't even reach the center of the rear view mirror on my mini Audi TT!! What are they thinking?? You could mount the power supply on the dash, but that would quite tacky.
