Kreg screws are awesome!
Common wood screws suck. It is definitely advisable to buy Kreg products for pocket screws.Common wood screws tend to split the piece you're attaching when tightened because of the wedge shape of the head.Pan head screws split the piece you're screwing in to because there is no tapping notch cut into the threads. Both have threads too far up the shank in shorter lengths so they don't draw the pieces together very well unless you drill a clearance hole. The deeper socket also makes it easier to get good connection in tight spaces without cam outs or stripping.
