It works for me
It has an Arduino-style 6 socket ribbon connector, and the spare cable is for that. The supplied USB is an A to B cable, A 6 position male-male header and a 6 position to 10 position (Atmel-style) cable, made of discrete wires, makes up the "6-pin to 10-pin ISP cable". It also had a CD but my host PC doesn't have a CD drive. Arduino Users: If this is a faithful clone it may not work with Arduino using the new Avrdude 6.3. This is a known compatibility issue and the latest Arduino has gone back to 6.1 until they can fix it. The new Arduino 1.6.11, or later, should be fine. (I quit Arduino a year ago, cold turkey, so I've not tested it) The 6 to 10 adapter is wired screwy. It's like an x-axis mirror? Odd application? Anyway, it was simple to reposition the sockets to suit my needs. I half expected to make a cable anyway so no big deal. I'm using this on Linux and the system reports "03eb:2104 Atmel Corp. AVR ISP mkII", so it looks like a clone. My udev rule in rules.d: #Atmel Corp. AVR ISP mkII SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="03eb", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2104", GROUP="uucp", MODE="0666" My toolchain includes avr-gcc 6.1.1, gcc-objcopy 2.27 and avrdude 6.3. With avrdude I'm using device "avrispmkII". Once wired for my application, there were no issues loading the program. Maybe I'll try avarice with debug-wire at some point.

Works great :)
I got this programmer for a small project using an ATMega128. I had previously installed AVR Studio and borrowed a JTAGICE mkII programmer, and had the board working with that. But I had to give it back, so I needed my own programmer. I connected this AVRISP mkII to my PC, and to my project board with the squid type cable. It was recognized immediately by AVR Studio and connected to the chip without any problem. I was able to set all the fuses and lock bits, erase the flash, and re-program my hex file with no problem. It behaved exactly as the Atmel programmer, at almost 1/10th the cost. A great value.

A must have to protect your intellectual property!
Works like a charm! Does not provide power to chip. I can program via Arduino IDE is using avrdude via terminal on my Mac. Setting fuses is easy, clearing EEPRON, etc. very nice little unit! To lick (protect) chip, set lick fuses to 0x0C after programming.

Great tool
Worked great and I think faster than my Atmel ICE. Tested with Atmega48PB, Atmega88PB and Atmega168PB. Only reason it is not 5 stars is the USB was a little wonky to start. Otherwise a great tool.

works a treat!
this device was brought so i could work thru the Make:Atmel Programming in C book. Eschewing the separate editor with avrdude command line setup as.well as the old version of atmel studio on the cd.i decided to just try it with atmel studio 6.2which i had from a seminar. It worked flawlessly with it and I was able to use it with Atmega168 20PU ics so far. I was able to program amd load all the ezamples to chapter 4 of the book. you need to have. a source of power for your target chip and you need fto watch your wiring from the program header to the ic but otherwise works a treat. separate leds tell you the status on the host pc side and on the target chip board side. dont forget to switch out or remove any of your circuitry in series or across the isp bus as it can interferr with the programmer.mosi miso clk and gnd as well as reset should be dedicated during programming of your chip.

Nice package!
Solidly build, nice accessories and no issues with compatibility. Apparently, the firmware is not the latest version but it upgraded automatically when I used them with Atmel Studio.
