My 4 year old loves it
I have no idea what it is about this game, but here's our story: My husband and I each made a daily goal for the month (exercises and writing respectively), and my kiddo wanted to be part of it. He wanted to practice reading each day. Ok, I thought, let's get a few tools and go for it. This is by FAR his favorite reading activity. We play all different variations, co-op, competitive, face up, he helps me read mine, or once by flashlight, etc etc. It's a great little game, but the way it's expanding his understanding is pure magic in my mind. I cannot tell you what it is he loves or why it works for him/us, but it's worth a try!

Fun for beginning readers
I purchased this for my granddaughter when I noticed she was starting first grade unable to read. (She learned very little with online learning during her Kindergarten year.). I am using this game along with another game hoping she won’t realize they are educational 😀. I encourage a quick game nightly and she likes it so far. By keeping it light and limited to one or two rounds she is gradually learning rhyming word family endings like -ed, -at, -an, etc. If your child is ready to learn basic 3-4 letter words i recommend it. If your child has trouble rhyming they will need more support from you to play. It’s up to you to be enthusiastic and keep it fun to get the most out of it. The product is thick cardboard and very durable.
