Q: Why is this item priced so high?

Probably so high because it is very well built and packaged and there really isn't any competition for this level of build quality. Price is quickly forgotten, quality is remembered forever.

Q: I will be traveling soon and I want to take it with me. Can you undo or dismantle the furniture?

I would advise against that. Once it’s built it’s very sturdy and it’s set up so that you don’t take it apart after building.

Q: How much weight does one shelf hold?

Can't say for sure but I've got mine filled with albums and there are zero issues. It's built like a tank. I'm sure I could stand on it with no problems.
