Bosch Moisture Meter UniversalHumid (Precise Results Thanks to Wood Group Selection and LED Traffic Light for Easy Interpretation)

If you are interested in wood moisture content especially in solid wood or slabs then you can't go wrong with this little beauty.

We installed a new woodstove in our home this month and the wood needs to be less than 20% moisture. I looked at dozens of moisture meters and was wholly unimpressed until I came across this Bosch branded one. I was a bit hesitant to order since it was coming from the UK but it arrived a WEEK before it was scheduled to. As for the meter itself, it is extremely well built and is not slippery in the hand. It appears to give accurate readings (we don't have another meter to test alongside with it but we know how long much of our wood has been seasoned to give us a general idea). The prongs are very solid and sharp and pierce any wood we have tried very easily (and they can be replaced if needed though I don't know where one would source them). The cap that covers the pins has a magnetic side that slides onto the back perfectly when in use. There are lights (red, yellow, green) that light up telling you if the wood is dry enough in addition to an LCD screen (that is very easy to read) stating the actual moisture content. Overall this is a very reliable and well built device that I would recommend. The only 'flaw' is that even when the device is turned off it drains the batteries. After having gone through two sets in a couple weeks (and only using the meter less than an hour in total) we now take the batteries out when we are done measuring logs and store them in the box with the meter.

It's impossible to vouch for the accuracy unless you have a known accurate device to measure against. However, the protective cap has a built-in calibration tool. When you use the probes to measure across the tool you will be told if the reading is within calibration. This is much better than the "self calibration" advertised on most meters in this price range. The dual settings for two wood groups helps ensure more accuracy. The unit feels robust, not cheap. The ergonomic shape is much better than the majority of units I've seen for pushing the probes into dense wood. Readings are simple and fast. The last three readings are recorded on the LED screen for quick comparison. Overall, I feel I made the best choice for a reasonably accurate and robust meter with good features at this price point.

Simple to use, just select the wood group and insert the pins. Includes stickers with wood species to pick the correct wood group. Includes a calibration method to determine it's still measuring correctly, that's a good peace of mind. When you jam the probes in deep and then remove it the battery cover slides off, that's sort of annoying, just need to grip it tight. I bought it strictly for measuring moisture of lumber that I cut on my sawmill and so far the readings are consistent.
