Q: Does this work on 5” backseat?

I think that this one I returned and ordered another that was longer, as I have an older solid core door and the longer one fit just fine..

Q: Will this work for a 3-3/4 inch backset?

No it will not. Unless you find a 3 3/4 backset latch or door knob of an old door, or a used one being sold online. You will never find a new online. You'll have to buy a new door, or make modifications to your current door ie, make a new hole and patch up old.

Q: Best to buy from hardware store. No specs for spindle size. Appears to be 3 different sizes. Why no specifications?

Fits either 1-3/4” or 1-3/8” backseat. Perfect fit for my entry door latch set which failed after 16 years of use.

Q: Will this work with a 8mm spindle door knob. I need something that will work with that size spindle that goes from onknob to the other threw the door.

Again, I don't know but you could get one, try it and if it doesn't fit, send it back
