Calphalon Small Nonstick Roasting Rack

After looking in stores for a roasting rack for about five (!) years, I realized I could get one on Amazon. There were many choices, and this wasn't the cheapest, but it was the size I wanted. I use a roast rack at least weekly, not just for turkeys and large cuts but also for two-person round roasts, for ordinary roast chicken, for pork loin, and many other foods that I don't want to have to cook in a large roasting pan. The item name describes this as a small nonstick rack, but it isn't really small. It completely fills a normal sized 10x13 cake pan. I do think it would hold an average turkey too, and also most hams, including big ones. The label specifies using a soft cloth or sponge to clean, because steel wool, etc. will scrape off the non stick coating. However, it doesn't take much scrubbing to clean this, because the nonstick surface is a quality one. I think this item was sized to fit into a specific calphalon pan, but it fits into my standard pan, is sturdy and has very thoughtfully placed handles.

I saw this same rack on another site for $22 plus $5.95 shipping so, of course, I came back to Amazon and paid $19 with free 2-day shipping as a Prime Member. There are three noticeable places where the forging, or connection, shows which give me pause and I hope won't be a problem in cleaning. Of course, even Calphalon has their products made in China now so if I get lead poisoning from my roasting rack, so be it. Otherwise, this is a great rack, a perfect size for me, is exactly what I wanted, and it is in addition to the same size v-shape non-stick rack that I already have. The v-shape non-stick rack is cleaned in my dishwasher and I expect this one will be as well even though instructions suggest warm soapy water. That may work one or two times but after the rack has been sitting in a roasting pan for a few hours, it WILL go into the dishwasher.

I've been looking for the perfect roasting rack for some time now and this is it. It's heavy weight and the entirely covered in a smooth, non-stick coating. The lifting handles are fixed in place but quite generous, allowing room for an oven mitt on your hand. I really like that the "ribs" are thick but widely spaced. They still support your food well but fewer "ribs" are easier to clean when you're done, although it is dishwasher-safe. Definitely the quality you expect from Calphalon. This rack comes in 2 sizes (this is the smaller one) and I bought both as I wanted the larger one for cooking ribs and large pork loins. Since the lifting handles are fixed (they don't fold down) be sure to measure the roasting pan you will be using to make sure this will fit. If the size works for you, I think you'll be happy with this reasonably priced, well-designed rack.

Works as expected, sturdy. Minus one star only because even when you grease it or spray with oil some things will stick to the "non-stick" grates. Not the end of the world but "non-stick" is a little misleading.

Thrilled to be able to replace the rack I got with my roasting pan. It still takes a bit of work to get gunk off the rack, especially between the lines. But so much better than without the nonstick coating. We used our old one quite a bit and the nonstick coating was starting to crack on the bottom of the rack. The cracks and rusting that appeared to be happening on the old rack made me not want to use drippings for gravy. The coating on the current rack (as opposed to the one I got with the roast 6+ years ago) looks a bit different. I hope it lasts, and I hope it last a bit longer than the first. Will add to review after we've used it many more times.

I've had this rack for over a year now and I've used it many, many times. It's a roasting necessity for a beautiful holiday turkey, everyday chicken, or fabulous sirloin roast (gives you uniform roasting by allowing heat to circulate around the meat and preventing the lower portion of your roast or bird from boiling in it's own juices at the bottom of the roasting pan). This particular rack is offered in a larger size, but when I bought it last year, this was the only choice available. I'm very happy with it -- I've cooked a few 20+lb turkeys in it and don't see the need for the larger rack. Granted, my 22lb turkey did look like a size 18 woman in a pair of size 6 jeans, but it still worked quite well! I've never had a problem with clean-up that a little soaking in soapy water didn't fix. The rack doesn't look as lovely as the day I got it, but geez... it's been roasted a couple dozen times and it's still going strong. I highly recommend this rack.

The rack is good: sturdy and relatively easy to clean up. (All devices with individual bars like this are tedious to clean, of course, and I don't really put such things in the dishwasher. The nonstick makes it as easy as possible.) It fits well in a 13x9 pyrex dish, so there's not really a need for a dedicated roasting pan. I have no complaints.Word of caution: though it doesn't say so prominently on the Amazon purchasing page (as of 2/10/13), this is the "small" version of Calphalon's roasting rack. It's great for chicken, and we've done a duck. A smallish (12lb or so) turkey would be a squeeze, and anything larger than that probably won't fit at all. Calphalon makes a 'large' version of this rack that you should look at if you're intending to do turkeys.

This works well for chicken and smaller turkeys (tight but fine for my 16-lb a Thanksgiving turkey). Non-stick works well and fit snug in a standard 9x12inch pan, just make sure your pan has vertical sides otherwise it won't work. For the turkey, I placed the rack in a large roasting pan which did better to protect from juices missing the pan.

Does a great job although beware, depending on the placement in your pan, it can easily slide.

After many years of use I needed to replace the rack that originally came with my Calphalon roasting pan due to the nonstick surface wearing off and rusting and I was a bit disappointed because the gauge of the metal on this one is not nearly as thick as the original rack.
