A Slower, Bleaker, but Ambitious Sequel to Wool That Delivers
If you enjoy dystopian thrillers, the Silo series is among the very best. I loved Wool, so my expectations were very high for Shift, the second book in the Silo series. The novel is an ambitious and structurally complex sequel that significantly expands the scope of the world first established in Wool. In Shift, Howey explores the origin and construction of the silos through the introduction of numerous new characters, along with the return of some who appeared in the first book. The story moves across multiple timelines, overlapping with events from Wool. As in Wool, the writing is excellent throughout. For me, some of my strongest sections involved Jimmy/Solo and the tragic, lonely story of his life in the silo. I am hoping he plays a larger role in the third book. One major difference is that the story moves at a slower pace in Shift compared to Wool. The focus in Shift on the political and technological origins of the silos, across multiple timelines, slows the novel down, especially compared to the more action-oriented story told in Wool. I would also say the tone is bleaker in Shift, as there is less action and it takes a more large-scale perspective on how control is maintained within the silos. Overall, I very much enjoyed the world-building in Shift, but I would still say that Wool is a slightly stronger book. While there are interesting new characters introduced in Shift, none of them match Juliette’s fierce determination and compelling story from the first book. And for those who have not yet seen it, the Apple TV+ adaptation of the Silo series is definitely worth watching.

Not same level as fist volume, but still great
Not as great as the first volume, but still maintains a good level of matured characters and wonderful narrative.

Mauvaise couverture
La collection indiquée dans l’annonce ne correspond pas à celle qui est livrée. C’est d’autant plus dommage dans le cadre d’une trilogie où l’on préférait avoir les 3 livres d’une même collection et identité visuelle.
