you can do everything the remote does without it, but when you're in the middle of recording your video, for example, it certainly is a nice convenience to have at your fingertips

Changing scenes in OBS
This remote would strangely change the scenes in my OBS when I was trying to pan down on my webcam. Also, it must be used with the app open on your computer which created significant lag in my video. This makes it unusable during a broadcast.
