I purchased this gas strut and used it to customize these two 4 X 2.5 foot trunk cabinets that is built into the corners of my bonus room. It was just used to store items, but the previous owners never put hinges on the 4 X 2.5 foot plywood that is used as a lid. The plywood just lays on top and it was annoying for me every time I went to get inside them.I decided to add hinges and these gas struts so I did not have to hold open the lid with one hand. I saw some videos linked from product and though once I pushed it down all the way, the lid would stay closed. It did not. (purchased the wrong ones I suppose)I did some research and saw how some gas struts have a tiny hex valve you can turn to release some pressure. This one does not have it unfortunately.But that's okay, I ended up adding small thick multi-colored strong string, well it's between string size and rope size. I attached one part to the lid (screwed it in) and the other part to the box. Now I use that to hold down the lid from popping up. I guess it's a poor mans latch.Works great and it's easy, needless to say these gas struts are strong and was obviously meant to be used on an suv's trunk door to lift it up. So I must have ordered the wrong struts I see people use for custom cabinets. But it works and I plan on making a custom door latch made from wood to get rid of the rope.
