does the case float or do you need the floating lanyard?

It does not float. It does come with a cinching lanyard we just made sure it was secure before snorkeling we even floated off a waterfall and had no issues.

Dust proof like predecessor? Whats the drop rating?

Dust proof yes and as far as drop rating not sure of exact specs but we dropped our phone off of a pier and it was over 20 ft and phone was fine
