Absolutely superb value for money!
Since my retirement in 2019 I've taken up knifemaking as a hobby but, keen as I am,Damascus steel is way beyond my current skill set but it's hard to resist the urge to own such beautifully patterned blades. I've added a couple of commercial knives to my collection & finished up 2 other blank blades - none of which was cheap. When I accidentally found these I was skeptical when I saw the low price. There are small blanks available at Much higher prices than this - just for one! I thought I'd take a punt: £75 for 5 was too hard to resist - £15 each;cheaper than most plain spring steel blanks! The blades arrived within 48 hours - a good start.they came well packed & protected in individual oiled sleeves & bubble wrap.I recommend unpacking in the shed or garage as it can be a messy business. Upon seeing all 5 blanks laid out on the bench I was bowled over by their quality. True,if you start going over them with a magnifying glass you will find imperfections & 1 was very slightly bent but you'd be churlish to make any negative comments at this truly superb price. The blanks are all between 9 & 10 inches in overal length with blades of 4.5 to 5 inches with 3 pre-drilled holes in the handles. The blanks are 3.5 to 4mm.thick at the spine (sorry,I can't measure in 64ths.of an inch!). All of them can be fitted up with scales without the need to make guards or bolsters but I will be making guards for at least 3 of them as I just prefer how guards look, handle & protect. Note that I don't consider Any of these to be a Kitchen knife;they are Hunters, skinners & Bushcraft blades & the biggest, heaviest one is best described as a Kwaiken/Tanto. The random patterned Damascus is beautiful to the eye & the blades arrive very sharp & quite nicely ground in a concave profile with a seconary edge. The steel is properly hardened & appears to be similar to 1095/15n20 knives that I own. The only drawback with Damascus is that it can be a pain to look after as it rusts very easily. Keep blades lightly oiled & don't store the knives in Leather sheaths. These blades deserve to be fitted up to a high standard with quality scales & liners & look forward to warm Spring weather so I can get into the shed & start sorting through my Micarta,Pakkawood,Bone & Hardwood stock! European white Oak or white bone look great when contrasted with the dark striations in the Damascus, for example. Apologies for my verbose rambling but I really am So impressed with these blanks - you can easily turn them into Heirloom pieces of Art. Their VFM will be Very difficult to beat - Superb!
