The Importance of Feedback When Teaching, Coaching, and Mentoring Children
A great book that highlights the importance of feedback when teaching. The authors use feedback as a mechanism to show (using various examples) how it can be used as a way to improve student learning. Is designed for students as young as 5 years old. Overall I loved the book and it really provided me with some effective ways to teach, coach, and mentor my kids. The book is designed for teachers but you can easily apply its principles for your home. If you're looking for a "manual" on how to effectively teach kids, this is it. I cannot recommend this book enough.Below is a summary of the book:The authors identify and explain three first-person questions that should "drive all feedback" when it comes to student learning:1) What am I trying to achieve?2) How much progress have I made so far?3) What should I do next?Chapter 1 has an excellent feedback checklist that identifies criteria that all feedback should include.Chapter 2 talks about the importance of making feedback a process and have it continuously ongoing--it's not effective as a a one-shot deal.Chapter 3 describes the importance of creating a culture of feedback where students actually welcome the feedback they receive and believe it will make them better.Chapter 4 highlights the need to identify learning goals before feedback is provided to students.Chapter 5 talks about a framework used for goal settings.Chapter 6 discusses SOLO (structure of observed learning outcomes) framework as a way to provide feedback.Chapter 7 highlights the Seven Steps to Feedback and how to make feedback effective without adding to your workload.Chapter 8 identify tools for feedback. Talks about the Learning Challenge and Learning Detectives--two tools that are currently being used in schools. "The Learning Challenge helps teachers structure lessons and helps students challenge themselves. It has been used successfully with three- to eighteen-year-olds and is now a reference point in hundreds of classrooms around the world." "Learning Detectives are students who have been nominated to stay outside the main learning task. Their job is to look for clues of high-quality learning".

Encouraging success with positive feedback
This is a wonderful book to help adults give positive feedback and encourage learning in children. It is designed for teachers, but has principles that can easily be applied to any learning situation in or out of the classroom. There are eight chapters that address topics such as what feedback is, how to set learning goals and meet those goals in a constructive manner. The lessons are about the student or any child being encouraged by feedback so that he or she will find the motivation to reach the goal. The book is written in a way that clearly states the main points. There are exercises and examples of learning intentions and success criteria. Each chapter ends with a review and next steps. I think it's a good resource for any adult who is in an environment that teaches children and teens, whether that be at school, on a court or field, or at home.
