The best cosy crime writer does it again!
You know when a book really entertains you - it’s when you can’t stop reading, you just have to read that bit more - and then that bit more, and on and on, but at the same time you don’t want to get to the end because - well, you’ll have to read something else. Hsin-Yi Hanna’s Oxford Tearooms Mysteries are so good that even as you know you don’t want the book to finish, you have to go on reading because the story, the characters, the writing, are so good that each book is a genuine pleasure. This is the 11th book in the series. Quite how someone can write 11 books in a series and they are all so good that you can’t wait for the next one, I don’t know, but Hsin-Yi Hanna does it every time. Absolutely superb.

Disappointing.
I've really enjoyed the previous instalments in this series. I liked the frivolous antics of various regular characters and the lighthearted way the British psyche was portrayed but this instalment crossed the line into the realm of stupidity.Gemma's mother has always been a bit flamboyant but is beyond belief this time when she gets her daughters police inspector boyfriend to give a talk dressed in fishnet stockings etc. apparently based on the fact that it's something that is part of the British entertainment culture. Really? (This comment stems from my personal experience of having to sit through and pretend to enjoy pantomime as a child 😠🤮!).Then there's the episode with the old biddies and Gemma in the dental surgery! What can I say!? (no interrobang on my keyboard). Gemma goes off nosing into the dentist's private quarters and when he catches her there, does he call the police? No, he just calmly discusses the murder. Really! What also annoyed me was the increasingly frequent use of coarse language by people who would not use in polite company. Ms Hanna states in her glossary that these words are commonly used by the British, yes that is certainly the case in certain areas but not in this book. Her explanations appear to show that she is not aware of the crude bases from which some evolved. It certainly seems to explain why the US think that all Brits can't speak without certain vulgarities.Thank goodness that Devlin has decided to take a break in his relationship with Gemma but I doubt it will be for long. This is such a tired format that everything is being regurgitated.

Becoming formulaic and rather silly
I agree with another reviewer that the whole fishnet stockings debacle was just plain silly and I could hardly believe what I was reading. I also noticed the increased use of unnecessarily coarse language. I know that we hear it all the time, but it really did not ring true in the setting of the story and the characters. Gemma is becoming rather annoying also and seems to come across as increasingly immature at times. I can't really see her and Devlin as a couple and he is clearly now finding her as irritating as I do - and don't get me started on the Old Biddies! Would they really behave like that with the young Detective Constable? It was embarrassing to read. I only bothered to finish the book because I paid for it, having read all previous books in the series via Kindle Unlimited. I have enjoyed the previous books in the series, but this one seems to be completely over the top. I don't think I will bother with the next one.

Back to the tearoom
Love these books and have them all. Like the mysteries and the catch up with the characters as always enjoyed reading it and trying to work out who did and why before the big reveal at the end. The tearoom is good to revisit. An easy read and will pass a few hours pleasantly

Not the best
I enjoyed listening about the Tiwanese customs very much.Always love the scenes with Muslie in. This book, however became a little silly and unreal. I like stories that could possibly be true.Completely fed up with the Dev and Gem rom com and wish she would see sense and marry Lincoln.I enjoy all HY Hanna books, my favourite being the Cottage Garden Series.

A joyful page turner mystery
I have now read all books in this series and they just get better. A strong story introduces new characters but still keep the same main characters. I love the characters which are well written and believable. The story keeps you guessing and is not obvious. I love the mix of the real and imaginary places that blend together so you don't know.A good mix of personal issues as well as mystery and I will look forward to reading the next one in the series. You can't read without smiling at the antics of Museli, what a tinker he is and like another human in the stories. As with all H Y Hanna books series I hate to reach the end but at the same time can't put the book down.Disclosure: A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.

Clue: A book you will thoroughly enjoy (5,4)
I thoroughly enjoy this series of books and would be delighted to be able to visit Gemma cafe! This story has some personal issues for Gemma - some neatly resolved but others not so. I liked the inclusion of the crossword clues especially the one which gave Gemma the insight into the killer.I also enjoyed the information Gemma's mother imparted to her about the Taiwanese customs that her new friend Mrs Chu taught her, although I'm not sure Gemma's father was as sure about the furry Hello Kitty slippers as her mother was!As usual this is a gentle read with no violence or bad language. The most of the usual characters are involved including in the Old Biddies; in fact you should read this just to see what they get up to with a unknown dentist....This book was sent to me by the author for my honest review and they are of my own opinion.
