So Close to Good Enough
So I really want to give the Aodin Mini Smart Android Pico Projector five stars. I really do want to.It is light weight and Very portable. The 2.5+ hours of battery charge will give you the staying power to get through most movies on a charge. The Bluetooth connection to speakers is flawless and allowed the designer to not have to add weight for better sound. It becomes a component in a system nicely. The 50 lumens doesn’t sound like much, but in a darkened room or outside at night it really does well. We’ve used it on nights of full moons and had no issues with light levels.Once you get used to the feel of the air-mouse and learn that a sharp swing will reset the internal gyro so you can adjust where the pointer is compared to where the cursor on the screen is, navigation becomes simple. The built in KitKat has a proprietary menu that makes it a little different from you Android phone or tablet. Still the menu is a good touch. It simplifies navigation by classing a few major apps on their own, like Kodi. It also has a favorites folder on the desktop where you can drop such much needed apps as Netflix or Hulu.Kodi in of itself is a nice touch for media player. It can stream music, and a wide variety of video apps. Additionally you can stream content straight off the internet, but be careful with that. This is software that doesn’t discern copyrights.Yes, I really want to give this 5 stars. We use it frequently, watching Netflix in the hot tub several nights a week. But there are a few down falls that keep me from giving it that perfect rating.Like the fact that Kodi comes with many many preloaded pluggins. Sometimes you’ll fire up Kodi and see several pluggins update or at least attempt to update for the first few minutes. Oh, it’s only a minor annoyance.Honestly the power of the WiFi is probably the biggest downfall. It will stream Netflix just fine even at a distance from a router. But with blueray format it is possible to great movie files on your home server that are 8GB! When you start trying to stream that, the weak WiFi just can’t keep up. My phone and my laptop can keep up at the same distance. But the projector lags so bad the sound track doesn’t even load and the frame drop from the videos is atrocious. Now in defense the projector supports a micro-SD card. From what I read in the Q&A it’s limited to 32GB. You can still stack several movies on it if you are going camping or something, but it is a limit. You can always keep more on a USB stick. The projector does support 2 usb devices. Of course most are preformatted FAT32 which has a limit of 2GB files. Here’s a hint for you, Android will read NTFS, but unless you root it, it won’t write to NTFS. So you still can get the bigger files to it. But honestly better WiFi would be so much easier! All in all, for the price it is a great little projector that almost fits my needs… Almost.

Easily Mirrors screen from iPhone 6 with a stand alone wireless network.
The customer service is outstanding- at first I thought I would not be able to stream video wirelessly to it from an iPhone 6 (iOS 10), but a rep answered my e-mail within an hour or so and provided concise directions. My primary requirement was to be able to stream Power Point presentations to it from an iPhone or iPad, in the ABSENCE of an existing WIFI network. It has a straight forward way to create a WiFi hotspot, and has an "App" called "Airplay" which allows you to mirror anything on the Apple Device you are sending to it. Presentations work well, but I've found this works for anything on your screen, although there is a performance hit with video, which should be expected. It appears to have "hooks" for operating as a stand alone NETFLIX and YOUTUBE player when it is in an established network. A lot of bang for the buck. Automatic Keystone correction. Only two unavoidable weaknesses- not especially bright (typical for this size unit), and speaker ineffectual (typical for this size unit).

Amazing hardware, mediocre software
The technology packed into this stylish little pico-camera is actually mind-blowing. Ten years ago the picture this thing throws out would cost probably $5,000. Its only slightly larger than my iPhone 7 Plus, and the sleek design and rose-gold color makes it almost look like something Apple would make.First let me tackle the issue of "lumens". This little guy isn't rated very high -- like 100 lumens. And when you compare that to the bigger projectors which are 1,000-6,000, you would think this thing has the lighting power of a candle. But this isn't true. In a DARK room the picture it throws is amazing, crisp and clear up to 120 inches. I place it on my floor and project it on the ceiling over my bed, typically firing it up when I climb in bed and put on a Netflix movie or watch some YouTube videos. The built in Android 4.4 software isn't the best and that's mostly Google's fault. Its very clear that this is smartphone software slapped on a projector, and the apps pretty much just plain suck compared to their Apple equivalents. For example, HBO Go, Showtime Now, and YouTube are all on the projector or you can install them through the Android store. I have an AppleTV 4th generation which has the same software installed, and because the built-in apps are so weak, I prefer to use them. Which brings me to the HDMI input.Perhaps the best thing about the Aodin Mini Smart Pico projector is the HDMI input. I put my AppleTV into it, and an Amazon Firestick, and you can use any HDMI device you want. The picture this projector throws of from my AppleTV is just stunning -- the interface bright, crisp and clear, and all of my favorite apps available through Apple's slick, fluid and responsive interface. I love firing up the Reuters news app and catching 15 minutes of great, straightforward reporting though their slick tvOS app. Or checking out the latest YouTube videos. And AppleTV's remote control is super easy to use.The remote control that comes with this projector is OK, though using it in the "air mouse" mode is usually confusing and very picky, probably because I'm navigating the device's interface as it is projected on my ceiling, which I am holding the "air mouse" horizontally. The result is very frustrating and confusing as I have to constantly flick my wrist around to get the mouse to point to the right button. But you can turn "air mouse" mode off and this is much more straightforward. As far as the Airplay feature built-in to the projector, I have to say its pretty terrible. I've gotten it to work with some of my Apple devices and not with others, it depends on the version of iOS your device is using. And when it does work, it just mirrors the display, I haven't gotten it to throw a fullsize picture, for example when watching an Amazon Prime movie on my iPhone. It only mirrors display of the iPhone, it doesn't go into fullscreen mode on the projector. This is different from how Airplay works on the AppleTV -- when I tell Amazon Prime to Airplay to my AppleTV, the picture on the screen is fullsize, edge to edge. It doesn't mirror the iPhone at all -- in fact the iPhone shows the navigation interface. Very slick. Which again is why I prefer simply using my AppleTV via HDMI input on the Aodin projector. Everything just works, no need to rely on quirky and frankly inferior Android software. My biggest complain about the HDMI input is you have to first navigate the projectors software and click on the large "HDMI" button to switch the input. This means I can't simply take my AppleTV and its remote, connect to the projector and run, for example when bringing it along to a friends house. No biggie, but I also have to bring the Aodin remote as well. I wish when an HDMI device was plugged into the Aodin or it detected input from one, it would simply switch over to the HDMI input. And there doesn't seem to be a way to make the device default to HDMI either, so you have to manually switch the input every single time. The built in Kodi software really requires a lot of tinkering, is slow and crashy -- not as you may have heard an easy way to access semi-legal movies. I found that by going into the built-in Google Play store and searching for "Kodi updater" I was at least able to bring Kodi up to version 16.1, but alas not the current version 17. I was able to instal the Exodus add-on and have had some luck playing HD 1080p movies. This is tricky as you have to chose from a long list of sources and hope it plays without asking for a password. And then you have to hope its not the Russian subtitled version of the film with Russian subtitles, filmed directly off a movie theater screen. But you can indeed find super high quality streaming films if you look. And films that are currently in theaters. I don't know if this is strictly legal, but as I understand it streaming a movie isn't a crime, its downloading it.Compared to my old projector, this one makes very little noise. Which is great for nighttime use, as I typically fall asleep to a movie, or a documentary film on YouTube or listening to a Podcast using the app on my AppleTV. I simply love having a HUGE screen right above my ceiling, its such a cool and relaxing way to watch films.Bottom line is the hardware in this device is amazing. The software is pretty bad. I would plan on using it with an AppleTV or with an Amazon Firestick2. And speaking of Amazon, there is no Amazon Prime software available in the Google Play store and I searched high and low. Very annoying, it would have been nice to have this built-in in a pinch. The dream of having a super portable projector with all the video sources you need built in is still a dream. This little guy will provide you with endless high-quality entertainment, you just have to bring your own input device (AppleTV) to make the most of it.As far as sound, the built-in speaker is hardly anything at all. The way I deal with sound? I pair my AppleTV to a nice pair of Bluetooth speakers. You can pair the Aodin directly to all of your Bluetooth devices as well. This is nice, but it seems I have to dig down into the interface to pair it every single time, and then I have to deal with the mediocre built in software. Again, much easier to just boot up the projector, click on "HDMI" and let my AppleTV take over.Sorry if this sounds like an ad for AppleTV, but I must say adding a pico projector like this to AppleTV is just about the best experience out there. Maybe someday Android software will get better but I am not going to hold my breath.

Poor output
The device is portable but the images it creates lack definition even with all the lights out. It doesn't have enough lumens of output for even a small room.

Will invest in a different projector
Product plays movies well enough. That's it. Words are very difficult to read on this projector. They appear pixelated and fuzzy. No amount of focusing helps.
