Versatile kitchen appliance!
This small vac has already saved us tons of money. We had a party a few weeks back and had to store a lot of leftover cheese, fruit, and meat. We loaded up a bunch of bags and vacuum sealed them. The cheese is still good to go and the meats are nicely tucked into the freezer, taking up no more room than necessary. Everything, so far, has lasted as long as needed until we could eat it or get it in the freezer for meals later this year. The bags are super convenient and are easy enough to hand wash. I recommend hand-drying the inside with clean paper towels as air drying takes a long time (days, in some cases). I have not tried other brands of bags, but I think the Ziploc and FoodSaver versions would work fine with this unit.I have also done quick vacuum marinading with fish and chicken. The vacuum means you need only about 1/4 to 1/3 of the time to get the flavor infused to the meat. For fish, do not exceed an hour or maybe 90 minutes. On my first attempt, I went about 3 hours with salmon and a soy sauce-based marinade and it was overpowered by the marinade instead of merely enhanced. Chicken and beef can handle longer marinade times, but I haven't gone more than 3 hours with good results.Sous vide cooking is my next experiment using this sealer and bags. I will try to update with my results when I have got a few cooks completed.BTW: I also bought some 8 ounce Ball jars and a jar adapters and have filled them with soups, sauces, and guacamole (links below, no need for the tube, the sealer's suction cup covers the hole on top and makes a nice seal!). The guac stayed fresh and green for about 6 days and was still fairly decent when I finished it on day 8. The soups stay fresh tasting for several days but we have not tested them past about a week.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005TN7H?redirect=true&ref_=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_30http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000CFFS6?redirect=true&ref_=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_29

wonderful item - just got burned with defective bags - still the item is worth the money. I just have to get new bags.
Need to explain the one t star. The vac worked wonderfully sealing each and every bag that came with it. I had bought enough meat and such to freeze simply because I finally broken down and bought this little gem. it's a wonderful product to have when you are forced to live on disability because cancer ravaged your body. Every penny has to be accounted for, and losing precious dollars on food that gets frostbite is not something easily recovered from. If the experience ended with just how well the gun worked, my rating would be 5 stars and glowing. But unfortunately my glee was sadly interrupted 2 days after getting it. I went to grab something from my freezer, and I stopped to check the bags just to make sure they were all sealed -I was really curious to see how vacuum sealing stood up to the cold. I'm glad I did because 7 of the bags were no longer sealed. Well, they were sealed, just not vacuum-sealed. The two separate Ziploc portions were still bound together, but that was it. The plastic on one or both sides was/were no longer attached to the zipper portion. I'm not gonna scream horrible product, don't buy, or any of that other nonsense. I just think I happen to have gotten a batch where perhaps the glue was a bit older on the bags, or perhaps defective and crumbled in the cold. I won't slam the product or the maker for what happened. I just wanted that made clear. I gave it a one star simply because I am disappointed in what happened. I don't want to return the gun because I'm sure it works so long as the bags do. Once I get some more saved I'll buy bags to replace these. In the mean time I'll just go bach to the non-vacuum Ziploc bagsdon't not buy this item because of my review. I just happened to have gotten some defective bags. it happens. No one is to blame. It's just life.

Yes, it works with Foodsaver Fresh Saver bags!
Here's an answer to a question that I couldn't find before and so had to try it out on my own: Yes, it works with Foodsaver Fresh Saver bags! I purchased these bags: http://amzn.to/1nPcieM and tried them. They work! From which I conclude that other similar bags, even off-brand, will work as well. This is useful for those times when you want a cheaper disposable bag when you don't feel like washing the Waring Pro bags (which are, admittedly, great, but still a pain to wash after raw chicken, for example).I saw reviews here saying that they wrap their raw meats in ziplock bags prior to placing them in Waring Pro bags to avoid washing waring pro bags, and I've tried that, but it didn't really work. I use these vacuum sealed bags for sous vide, and during the cooking process juices would leak out from the ziplock bags and into the main bag anyway. So I'd have to wash it anyway, plus I would have wasted a ziplock bag. That didn't feel right either for environmental or financial reasons and just didn't make sense. Which is why I tried the cheaper Foodsaver disposable bags and was so happy to discover that they work. So now I use waring pro bags for vegetables and other foods after which washing/reusing is convenient and single-use bags I can toss for raw chicken and meats.I spent a lot of time researching vacuum sealers, and I'm so glad I selected this one. It works wonderfully and easily; charges well and the charge stand is convenient. What I appreciated after the purchase:-- the little "closer" thing actually works great to close all sorts of ziplock bags, not just waring pro bags. It's very convenient and does a great job of sealing the bag for sous vide cooking.-- I really like that I can open the bag, take some things out and then reclose/vacuum seal it again. It makes me much more likely to use these bags for storing fresh herbs and vegetables in the fridge.-- the bags sometimes seem to lose some vacuum while in the freezer. I'm not sure whether that's because I don't close them correctly or there are other issues going on. Still, I don't actually mind it, because it's very easy to vacuum out extra air again, especially right before I cook it sous vide.-- a few times juices/liquids have gotten into the vacuum sealer head, but it's very easy to take the clear plastic part off and wash it and whipe the rest of the head up. I like the design which makes it less likely that liquid will get into the actual vacuum head even if it gets into the clear head.

Great Vacuum, Poor Bags
Update: None of the bags I've tried are reliable. They rarely survive more than the first use.I really love the vacuum sealing pistol, by itself that gets 5/5 stars even though I might prefer a non-battery-powered model. The downside is the bags. They very easily create very small, very difficult to locate, tears in the bag. I'm using this product only to seal dry round-shaped dog kibble. I'm not sealing anything sharp, yet I've had to throw out more than half of the gallon sized bags that came with this.I can confirm that the waring pro pistol is compatible with the following bags which seem to be more durable than the waring bags. However, they are more difficult to couple against than the waring bags. The trick with these bags is to leave the upper right corner empty and lay the plastic bag completely against a flat surface - this make sealing easy. I'm not sure what it would be like to try and seal liquids with these bags. Still, I'll be buying these bags from now on instead of the waring bags.Ziploc Vacuum Bags, Gallon, 8-Count - 10. 7/16 IN X 10. 15/16 IN(Pack of 3)FoodSaver 12 Gallon-sized Vacuum Zipper BagsI bought the FoodSaver Wide-Mouth Jar Sealer and it is working great (no need to buy the food saver hose). So then I ordered the regular model FoodSaver T03-0006-02P Regular-Mouth Jar Sealer and it would not create a seal. I realized that the reason why is because of the circular groove within the plastic on the top of the sealer was preventing a good deal with the Waring Pro. So I took some silicone caulking I had leftover and filled in the groove (pictured). Voila, I can now seal bags and jars!Upgraded to 4/5 stars.
