ProTec PC-2 Humidifier Tank Cleaning Cartridge, 2-Count

These little doohickeys actually last a lot longer than the manufacturer states. We kept one in both of our humidifiers for years and never had any indication of mold or mildew.There are others that look like these things, but you need the ones that are made with silver. We only replaced ours because we replaced our humidifiers after more than a decade of use.I can't say yours will last that long, nor can I recommend you never change them. I can say they work great.

Works well in my humidifier!

First I bought the AquaStick for my 1-gallon ultrasonic mist humidifier. I put 2 in per the instructions, and it made absolutely no difference -- brown/pink slime appearing within a day, and absolutely disgusting and desperately needing cleaning within a week (as usual).Then I decided to try this one, even though it's more expensive and says it doesn't last as long. But this one actually works -- I've had it in for 2 weeks and only now am I just starting faint traces of brown/pink. The advertised silver content is something like 10x that of the AquaStick, so that might be the reason? Anyways, this is actually worth it -- it's making a HUGE difference in keeping the humidifier clean, and I don't have to worry whether all that bacteria slime is getting in my lungs.

I’m using these with my Honeywell HCM-350 cool moisture humidifier. The cleaning cartridges are expensive imo, but they do seem to be very effective. The filter definitely lasts longer. It’s been about five weeks now, and I’m about to drop a new cartridge into the water tank, and the filter, which was brand new five weeks ago, is still very clean and easily good for another month. I’m not seeing any bacteria or mold buildup on the filter, and I don’t see any slime buildup in the water pan. The filter doesn’t look new, but again, it’s definitely good for at least another month. In the past, I’ve had to replace my HCM-350 filters about once every five to six weeks if I’m running 24/7 because it starts to turn yellow/brown. So yeah, the cartridges seem to be very effective.That being said, I don’t feel good about throwing a plastic cartridge out once a month. This is just terrible for the environment. I don’t understand why ProTec can’t innovate and create a product that does not require the disposable plastic cartridge. I ran across a different product called Essick Air 1970-2 Humidifier, 2-Quart Bacteriostatic Treatment for around $22 here at Amazon. It’s a liquid thats added to each water tank refill. No throw-away plastic cartridges, and it’s much cheaper. Only caveat, you have to be precise in how much you add to each water tank refill, only 1/8 capful to each gallon of water. I read that adding more than the recommended dose of Essick Air 1970-2 bacteriostatic treatment to your humidifier tank can release excessive chemical residues into the air, potentially irritating eyes, skin, or respiratory systems. So, the ProTec cartridge is designed so that you can’t use too much product, it’s safer, just drop the cartridge in, set it and forget it for a month. The Essick Air treatment requires careful measurement of product before adding to your water tank, but no plastic cartridge to throw away every month. If it accomplishes the same objective, I might give the Essick Air a try when I finish my last ProTec cartridge.

These things are awesome! We are on well water and our humidifier would relatively quickly build up a slimy, brown film all along the entire inside of the tank and the diffuser housing. We thoroughly cleaned the humidifier and dropped one of these in and never get any more slime! Totally cured the problem. I never liked not knowing whether that brown slime was getting atomized and into our lungs. Now I don’t have to worry about it at all. We bought a two pack and the first one lasted for well over a month before I finally decided to change it because the crystals inside were slowly dissolving and leaving a very fine powder on the bottom of the humidifier. I wasn’t worried about that powder getting picked up by the diffuser, but thought perhaps it might clog something up over time if I let it collect for too long. I will definitely continue to buy these!

These work very well. I have been running two cool mist humidifiers all winter long for many years because of problems with dry eye and a winter cough. Keeping them clean from bacterial bio film has always been a hassle. I discovered this product in early December and put one in each humidifier. I haven’t needed to clean them once. I highly recommend them.

I want to start off by saying that I LOVE this product! I keep cool mist humidifiers in each of my boys' rooms, and usually run it year-round (my oldest has had an issue with dry skin in the past and it seems to help a lot). I have a Crane duck humidifier in one room and a Sunpentown/ MyFine polar bear one in the other. My only complaint is that the hole to the reservoir on the polar bear is too small to fit the cartridge. I wish the ball on the cartridge was just a little bit smaller, so it would fit. I used to clean both humidifiers with water and vinegar weekly, otherwise the parts would feel slimy and there would be small particles floating in the water. I've been using it in the duck for about 2-3 weeks and I haven't had to clean it at all (other than a quick rinse). I am definitely going to purchase this again, and would highly recommend it (as long as your humidifier has a big enough reservoir opening).

These work really well keeping the tank from getting slimy. I think some poor reviews are because people think they are a substitute for cleaning the tank. You still need to clean the tank regularly! A small but necessary job . . .

This was one of the best investments I ever made. I bought a new humidifier, a Honeywell with outstanding reviews, and the filter gave me trouble. In a little over a week it smelled mouldy in a really foul way, and within 2 weeks the filter literally fell to pieces in my hands. These are expensive filters to last such a short time. I changed the filter and bought 2 ProTec balls, one for each tank. It worked like magic! No smell, no moldy discoloration. These things are wonderful! If you're sitting on the fence, jump off it! Run and buy one of these things right now!

Works great, keeps humidifier bacteria free.

I thought when you use this thing, you don't need to clean as often, but I found that there are orange water stain and some black stains building up after a couple of weeks. I would rather use bleach and vinegar to do cleaning and sdisinfecting weekly. I will not buy again.

It might seem to work the first two or three weeks, but soon the mineral and bacterial buildup would come back in full force.
