Review: This is a great multiband distortion plugin - This is a great multiband distortion plugin. In a nutshell, there are around 25-30 different distortion algorithms (with 3 variations on each algorithm) that range from subtle to bonkers, and any of them can be applied to any of the four bands. The ability to control the size of each band, as well as the gain, spread, shape and various other options within each band, gives you a lot of control. You can also solo or mute each band to see what effect the distortion is having on the individual band as well as your overall sound. The primary issue I have with Ohmicide is the visualization; the small, all-red readout can make it very difficult to adjust bands. Particularly on the highest frequency band, I find myself having to adjust the gain of the band to see where it begins and ends, then pull the gain back down once I've figured it out. Otherwise I risk pulling the band over too far and, by extension, accidentally resizing the next band down. It's not a fatal flaw, but it's something I hope they improve in the next version. Some of the algorithms can also be a bit heavy handed, and it is the only VST plugin I have that can't seem to make the leap from my Mac to my PC when I pack up an Ableton project for mixing and mastering. I'm not sure why that happens, but that of course wouldn't be an issue for everyone. I think Multiband distortion is a surprisingly versatile tool for sound shaping, and this is where I use Ohmicide. The ability to morph between presets via MIDI means it can essentially act as an effect plugin, though care is necessary here for making sure you don't end up with straight up static. For creative purposes when you need anything from light to crazy distortion and when bands don't have to be exact, Ohmicide is a great option.
