I agree with all the good things other reviews have said here but no-one has mentioned how wonderful this book is as a resource for people wanting to use English Paper Piecing techniques to produce traditional blocks. The drawings/diagrams/patterns have no seam allowance, so are easy to trace or photocopy and many of them can be used the size they are or enlarged as required. The quilt in the photo below is my attempt at the Burgoyne's Quilt pattern on page 27 of this book, made with English Paper Piecing.

A real find
If you are looking for a standard (modern) patchwork book, full of glossy colour pictures of projects, this book is not for you. It is a reprint of a 1930s original, the paper is slightly yellow, the pictures are all sketches & diagrams in black & white, BUT there is a wealth of really useful information, & patterns for a vast number of traditional blocks. After half an hour, I was planning my next quilt but one, & the one after that (I just wish I had time to do more of them). Once you get past the paper, & lack of colour pictures, this is actually a very attractive book, & the little stories about some of the blocks remind you that this is a craft that has developed over many decades, which makes your current project feel like something that really has its' roots in history. This will be a valuable reference for me for years to come.

Worth having
I bought this book following Eleanot Burns videos, as she always mentions Ruby's work. It's very basic but is a staple; I find it very useful to understand block construction. Having black and white pages is of help as one can figure blocks in her own colours and is not influenced by designers' choices of fabric.

Essential for Quilters!
This book ticks all the boxes. It's one of the best block reference books I've come across and is concise and precise. I like the narrative, which connects us modern quilters with our sisters who pioneered the art and skills of this wonderful hobby through necessity and circumstance. I will use it again and again.
