Love my romertopf
EDIT: When roasting a whole chicken - when fully cooked - the chicken would be sitting in a puddle of juice, fat etc. I experimented with adding half-onions under the chicken - but this had the same issue after the onions broke down. My solution is to add a 6"x9" "pizza tile" into the pot. I add all my aromatics in the bottom of pot (lemons, onions, garlic, herbs, wine, etc) - then cover this with the pizza tile (tile is wrapped in non stick foil and in the large romertopft will sit about 1" off the bottom, then add the stuffed chicken (herbs tucked under the skin) --- then add potatoes, onions etc around the top of the chicken. As chicken cooks and fats, juice fall to bottom of pot - it mixes with the aromatics. A wonderful aroma. When done - the chicken is nicely suspended and not sitting in a puddle. Comes out just as juicy, moist and tender.Love my romertopf! I roast chicken and veggies. Delicious. Then after the first meal - I take some of the cooked veggies and run though food processor to make chicken soup with the leftover chicken. Delicious too. Bought a few "clay pot recipe" books. - so I am having good, healthy fun with this. AND IS SURPRISINGLY easy to clean. This is very important feature.

Great moist (but nicely browned) chicken everytime!
I love cooking with this clay pot and a smaller one that I have too, it just depends on how many people I am cooking for. I have roasted a whole chicken in this pot and it came out very moist and crispy on top (you do need to remove the lid for the last 10 minutes to really get a crisp, otherwise, it is just a nice brown). This pot has a glazed bottom and while you don't need to soak it like the top, I do anyway since the top is soaking. Soaking is very important to get that wonderful moist meat. I have also baked bread in this and it comes out like a wonderful french loaf. Just read the directions or go online to learn about its' care and for more recipes. It's a great pot!

High Quality Old Fashion Cooking
The first one I received had a damaged top part and I went for a replacement. I had a bad feeling about it so I kept the damaged unit at the house and waited for it to arrive. The second unit had a damaged bottom, so I made the right choice. Amazon got the shards back and I finally had a working unit. You absolutely must must must soak this unit in water before cooking. The manual tells you the same.My family is German and I am the third generation (that I know of) cooking with a Römertopf. My dad ruined one of his by not soaking it.I have made a number of meals in it and I love it.It adds a very unique flavor that cannot be recreated without a Römertopf.

Perfectly baked chicken every time
Buy it! Just do it you won't be disappointed I can guarantee that. I love using this clay pot and I cook a lot for my family. It is so easy to clean, yes it is big but so what, it is amazing. Everytime I make a whole chicken in this dish, my guests always ask where I got this weird clay pot from. The chicken is always juicy, tender, perfectly baked. The best part is I just throw it in the oven and let the clay pot do its magic. Of course I season the meat ahead ;)

Did it breast side down as recommended on a Romertopf cooking site and sure turned out ...
Bought this to bake no knead bread in but possibly should have gotten a small size as it did not loaf up just sprawled out. Hope I can use a tin or something inside to get a taller loaf next time. However today my 12 lb turkey was the tastiest and juiciest ever. Did it breast side down as recommended on a Romertopf cooking site and sure turned out great. Said to not do stuffing inside it so I stuffed the turkey full of sage, rosemary and thyme fresh from my herb patch, about a medium pack cup of the sage and rosemary and half that in thyme. Will buy the small for bread baking later if I can not work out a good process for baking satisfactorily sized and shaped loafs. Wished I had gotten one of these years ago. My wife said her mom had these in Germany and used it all the time. Look at prices elsewhere they will be higher, German quality is tops, packaging was outstanding got it in 3 days.

Better than OK but four negative issues.
While we like this cooker and even recommend it for all the reasons in the many great reviews, you should be aware of at least four issues.1) It is fragile and our first arrived broken because of poor packing. I would not have caught a hairline fracture that might split later unexpectedly.2) My wife says the sound of the top and bottom grating against one another is like fingernails on a chalkboard to her.3) Boiling liquid can escape and make a mess on the oven floor.4) It's bulky. Ask where are you going to store it?We bought the large, which is just big enough for two 4.5 lb. chickens side by side plus vegetables - that's the one that leaked, though, although we didn't use much broth. We transferred the meal ommediately. The breasts were remarkably moist out of the oven, but dried out left on the table after the first servings - that's just how un-marinated breasts are after slicing, however. So, the food is great and if you are OK with my minor complaints it's much better than just OK.

FANTASTIC COOKER!
I bought this larger version as I have an original 1977 small model that would not hold what I wanted to cook for family or friends. This new clay pot is fantastic! I used a Romertopf roast beef recipe recently and it was horribly good! I had guests over who still want to know how I pulled the flavor and tenderness off. They still don't believe it was in a "clay pot" cooker like their parents had on the shelf. Yep! The same technology! Better yet, perfect Amazon Prime service sent me a larger one in two days. I'm eagerly awaiting making lasagna in it for the family. Romertopf ORIGINALS are the best. My grandmother's 1977 unit is still cooking fine, just a little small. Buy one, try it and you will know. They are great!

Excellent highest quality product for roasting or baking. Will last a lifetime.
This is the real deal. Having lived in Germany 15 years I had a very good German made Roemertopf for delicious roasts and vegetables. This older one is still used but this new one my German husband is using to bake great pumpernickel bread from rye and wheat we grind just before making bread with saved sourdough starter from the last bread, You can be sure the best materials were used And you are not the quality control!!! Lasts a lifetime. A future heirloom.

A must have in any kitchen...
If you want moist and succulent roasts and chickens, or vegetal dishes, this is a must have. It's easy to use and clean and an all in one meal baker. I love clay baking as the results are superb. My first purchase arrived with a cracked lid but amazon/seller honored their product and all it took was a phone call and the amazon service agent immediately reordered another and it was at my door within a few days...no returns needed...just instant service...everything done for me...amazing.

EXCELLENT
I love this pot. I have never had chicken like I’ve had cooked in this pot. Whole chicken to die for...chicken wings are out of this world, fall off the bone. Even pork ribs are so tender and juicy. Will never cook in any other vessel again! 👌🏻😘

This clay pot works well.
Great product. I like that these clay pots are made in Germany. The glazed lower bowel makes cleanup easier as well. This clay pot is a suitable replacement for the Schlemmertopf, which used for many years.

The size I needed for a roast chicken
I needed to replace a clay baker - my favorite way to cook a chicken - and the only thing I was uncertain of was what size to order. This "Large" was just the size I needed.
