One of the best translations! Couldn’t put it down!
I had a hard time putting this book down! I was impressed with Sandra Smith’s translation of Camus’ The Stanger and it’s fluidity in reading. Some translations (esp. of Camus) are awkward and choppy, but not hers. After researching, I came across this gem and ordered it. This book is extremely well done and the words and sentences roll together making it an effortless read. Maupassant is brilliant in his short stories, but for this review I’d like to applaud the translator. Her introduction is extremely informative both in biographical content about Maupassant and a good literary basis for the works in the anthology. Now, I’d like to request that she translate more works!

Master of the Short Story
If you want to read a master of short stories, he's one of six. Him, Chekhov, Katherine Mansfield, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Flannery O'Connor, and Raymond Carver. If you like short fiction, Maupassant is a fun read. if you are studying short fiction, this edition is mandatory. These are stories that get to the heart of people trying their best to live. Also, you probably read "The Necklace" already.
