The tool is a hoe like device with a pivoting joint which can be pushed in the culvert on top of the debris and is then activated by pulling the tool back out. The pulling action causes the tool to dive down into the debris and then you simply pull it out. It is made totally out of steel so it is very durable. The handle of the unit is 1/2" threaded steel pipe ( which is not included with the tool because it is not economical for us to send you pipe through the mail) you can pick up a length of 1/2 pipe at your local plumbing supply or home center. For a extra long culvert like mine I needed (3) 10 foot lengths of pipe connected together with pipe couplings, but for most residential jobs one length of pipe is more than enough. You only need a long enough handle to get a little more than half way through the culvert, then you clean half the culvert from each end, so for a 12 foot long culvert an 8 foot long piece of pipe would be more than enough. For a longer culvert simply add more pieces of pipe. We stock sizes for standard 8",10",12", 14" and 18" culverts, the tools are made smaller than the I.D. of the culvert to allow for clearance.(the 14" tool is for 14" diameter culverts and the 12" tool is for 12" diameter culvert pipes). You can use a smaller size tool to clean out larger culverts, it just takes a few more passes.

Works quite well
Simple but durable design. I used it to help clear a blocked culvert. Works quite well. If you use this on your culverts once or twice a year, it will ensure proper drainage at all times. A little pricey for a few dollars of materials BUT it does work very well. Much cheaper than having it professionally cleaned. If you average the cost over many years of use, it's actually a pretty cheap solution. I endorse this product.

Works well, though expensive and you need to purchase additional materials
I have a 50ft long, 12" culvert that runs along my property line that backed up due to debris (mainly leaves and twigs) getting caught inside about 16ft in. I purchased this tool from Amazon and 2 pieces of 10 ft, 1/2" pipe from Home Depot along with couplings. The tool would work great if the debris inside the pipe filled it less than about half way up. But if the blockage fills the pipe to near the top( like in my case), you will never be able to push this tool through to grab the debris and pull it out. I ended up buying a 1/2" tee and a 2" nipple attached to one side (see pic), to create a hook which I attached to the other end of my long piping. I was able to poke through the blockage and pull back to start loosening things up and was able to pull down enough debris to allow the culvert tool to get in there and do its job. The other thing I found useful was setting up a fulcrum just outside the culvert (I used a rake handle-see pic). You will find it nearly impossible to raise the culvert tool and pole to the top inside the culvert once you get in about 10 ft or so, unless you can push your pole down on the other side of the fulcrum. In all, I would say this very specialized tool does what it's supposed to and seems solid, but I give it 4 stars because you have to buy additional materials to get the job done and, as others have said, it IS very expensive to begin with.

Did the job
Does the job. Not a standard thread but we were able to buy a fitting that allowed us to attach to a pole we already had.

Does the job well
Adding a 10' pipe from the big box store allowed me to clean the 14' culvert. It took some work to get all the sand & rocks out, but it did the job well. Need to remember which way the handle threads in to not twist it in that direction too much. For the harder packed section in the middle, I pushed the tool back and forth until it loosened it up enough to use the tool to pull it out. I did pull up on the handle putting the pole against the top of the culvert to allow me to have more downward pressure while pulling it out. This allowed it to dig in deeper and stay behind the dirt. I do like being able to unscrew this ans store is separately from the pipe.

Awesome product but way overpriced
I have been looking for a while for something to clean out by culvert and had come to the conclusion that I was going to have to pull it out to clean it till I found this on Youtube. It worked perfect. My pipe is 30' long so I had to get 2 sections of black 1/2 pipe and a connector. That actually helps in that it adds weight as you pull it back with the debris inside. My culvert was wet and I think it works best when it is as the debris is softer then. I had my culvert clean in about 30 minutes. It is a very simple design and is overpriced for what it is. But as I could not find any alternative it is way worth it.

Modified to a 3/4" handle
This seems to be the only product of its kind on the market and is way overpriced for the material involved; less than a square foot of sheet metal, a short piece of square tubing, a 1/2" threaded pipe coupler and a bolt with nylock nut. Since this company has the market on this tool, they can charge whatever they want.I didn't care for the handle adapter sized at 1/2". I didn't want to use pipe adapters that would make for more pieces to accidentally come loose. I had an old 3/4" coupler laying around and cut angles in it to mimic the 1/2" one. It works great and the 3/4" handle (used 3/4" intermediate metal conduit) adds some much needed downward weight to help in pulling out the gunk in the culvert. The 3/4" handle is also much stiffer and that helps too. I wrenched the handle into the adaper so it won't spin off when in use.In spite of the price, unless you have the skill and tools to weld something up, this culvert-cleaning tool works, albeit slowly.

My culverts are C•L•E•A•N !!!!
A brilliant solution for a difficult problem. I have 2 sets of tiles where my driveway crosses a ditch in 2 places. The tiles were 7/8 full, and any flooding would dam them up with leaves almost immediately. This thing really works. It was also helpful that I used a long-reach tree pole saw to drag through and cut the fine network of roots that were growing in the debris. Then I used this to drag the looser debris out. I predict that if I use this every year or two, it will be much easier. Letting roots grow in the tiles is no fun to clean out.But this thing does its job perfectly. It's work to use it, especially when one has 14ft of 1/2" steel pipe on it. But be patient and let the tool do the work, and it will get the job done.

Perfect
I ordered this to clean mud from 12” double wall pipe. Easy to use. We connected flexible 1/2” pvc pipe to the 1/2” female connector on the tool.this made it easier to reach into the pipe from inside a manhole. We added additional pipe as needed
