its the plastic framed cutting wheel with thin metal attached to it,, mine lasted 3 hair cuts,, cant find the good one any more, with the solid steel stainless cutting wheel,, my old one lasted 12 years,,, was very disappointed,,

What is the difference between red and blue models?

The key difference to look for is the blade design. The new "S" shaped blades do not cut hair well at all. 
The old style "X" blades rocked, and my last one lasted 22 years.

Let me make my response perfectly clear to anyone who is thinking about purchasing a Robocut hair cutting device. The original version of the  Robocut  has been discontinued, and is no longer being manufactured. No matter what picture that is being currently advertised, it is not the old version which did a great job cutting your hair.  Don't be fooled by the picture you see on any advertisement for the Robocut because what you see is not what you will receive.  I wasted over two hundred  dollars thinking I was going to receive the old version and was ripped off.  As I stated above, Do not waist your money on this newer version of the Robocut...because it is very poorly made and doesn't work.

From reviews, many customers ordering red version were not receiving r-28 model w/rectangular holes in cutting blades- is red actually the r-28?

I had a terrible experience with my purchase. I was sent a defected model. The seller refused to exchange it or refund me. It was suppose to be a gift for my father in law who had used this product before and needed a updated one. I am out the money I paid and no hair system.
