Who knew you could potty train a hamster?! ...
Who knew you could potty train a hamster?! Makes weekly cage cleanings so much easier. It didn't take much for me to potty train my hamster either. I just gave him 2 days to familiarize himself with his new home after getting him at my local pet store.Initially, he pooped everywhere! Tubes, bedding, you name it... he pooped it in. After 2 days, I simply put in the Kaytee Potty and removed all his poop from the cage. I added a scoop of his poop to the potty and it was a done deal. He just started using the potty afterwards and continues to do so—I've had him for at least 2 weeks now.I bought this for my Syrian hamster and while he could fit inside the potty and use it, I ended up taking off the top cover as it seemed uncomfortable for him to use—he had to squeeze in just to poop or pee. Because of its size, it's probably best for use with a dwarf hamster. If you have a Syrian hamster (or any non-dwarf hamster), look into Ware Manufacturing Critter Litter Small Pet Training Kit with Handy Guide as its bigger and more suitable for bigger hamsters. The transition was seamless in using the new potty. I just used some of the soiled litter from Kaytee Potty into the new one.One thing about the litter—my hamster likes to eat it! I'm sure it's safe for them, but I hate that he eats it. He doesn't seem to eat the litter included in the Ware Manufacturing Potty so I'm trying to find out if there's a way to purchase that litter.

Actually using these as food dishes now
I have two of these potties and both of my little robo dwarf hamsters used them as litter boxes as soon as I brought the hamsters home. I used Repti-Sand (desert white color) as the litter because it's easier to potty train robos with sand. The sand clumps pretty well. However, this potty is quite shallow, and the hamsters would first take a sand bath in the fresh sand I'd put in, which involves them digging around and flipping onto their backs and wiggling about with great joy, so sand would get kicked out of the potty. Also, scooping out the pee-soaked sand took some maneuvering because of the potty's lid. I don't like the scoop provided with this Kaytee potty, as the hamster head on the handle means I can't angle it as well (the Ware Critter Litter Small Pet potty's scoop is better). So, my hamsters loved to first take a sand bath and then pee in this Kaytee potty and it made keeping their cages clean so much easier, and I liked it but I wasn't totally in love with it. Instead I washed these potties and stored them, and now use small jars tilted on their side and the Ware Critter Litter Small Pet potties. So while I do like these Kaytee potties, they just really aren't necessary for potty training. Small glass jars work great tilted on their side with Repti-Sand in them (glass is nice especially if you have hamsters that like to chew on plastic, and it doesn't absorb odors). Tuck the jar into a corner and voila, instant hamster potty.Several months later I realized the hammies might like these clean Kaytee potties as a food dish, and they do. It's a nice safe, covered place for them to sit & eat in their food (robos like to sit in their food dish). They don't pee in them - either they've forgotten that they used to be potties, or they've made the connection of "no sand, but there's food, so don't pee here".Extra bonus is I can place these in the top rack of dishwasher and get them really clean.Side note: I disagree with people who docked stars because there wasn't room in their hamster's cage for this potty. The potty isn't that big... the problem is probably that their cage is too small (you need a minimum of 360 square inches per hamster, even if they're sharing a cage).

UNSAFE DONT USE LITTER
I put this in my syrian hamsters tank and she seemed immediately drawn towards it, she went for the litter first and it looked like she might’ve ate a couple pieces or stuffed them in her cheeks and then she started playing and rolling around in it, I was worried about her eating it so I removed the litter and i noticed her acting strange only a few minutes later, she was just laying there staring at nothing kinda unresponsive, she is usually very very active, playful and just can’t stop running around so this is so unusual for her. I really hope she will be okay. Use sand instead of the litter if you buy this, It is sort of small, My syrian hamster just barely fits and she is pretty small for a syrian as she’s still pretty young and not fully grown, there are definitely better options out there for a litter box though, you can’t even choose the color of these, I got an ugly green color. BUYER BEWARE PLEASE ! SPREAD AWARENESS TO THOSE WHO CARE ABOUT THEIR HAMSTERS HEALTH AND SAFETY!

Too small for Fancy Hamster & scoop missing
We just got a Fancy Syrian & this potty is way too little for her. It’s not much bigger than her tubes, which are a tight fit for that chunky monkey! It also didn’t have the little scooper that was shown in the pictures.

Finn potty trained himself in 5 days with this!
Love it! My hamster never pees anywhere else other than his potty now. I just ordered an 8 lb bag of litter for him. It was only $2 more than the 1 lb bag and made it not an add-on item with Prime so it will last awhile. The first night the potty was in his cage, Finn manged to take it apart and flip it over. I put it back together and tried again the second night. I didn't put it in his regular potty corner, since I wanted to change that. I would have as a last resort though. He started using the potty about half the time for the next few days and by Day 5 was using it 100%! So excited that my Finn is potty trained. This will reduce the frequency of me having to clean out his entire cage, thereby reducing stress on him. He likes things the way he puts them.Finn is a Teddy Bear Hamster. I have never tried this with a dwarf. His cage is large and has more than enough room. Actually he has several cages hooked together by tubes as he is a little explorer.Great purchase at a great price. So glad I took the chance on it.

It’s decent
Hamster didn’t really understand what to do with it and kind of just laid in it but it’s a good little accessory.

Lice little addition to th ecage!
Our hamster got used to it almost immediately. We took the top off, as the teddy bear hamster we have just pushes it off; probably too constraining for him. Easy to clean.
