Power house of a DI box. Super pleased.
This DI rocks! Excellent design and functionality. No battery but power source included. Very easy to shape of great tone out of this pedal. And you can fully dial in the distortion as well as choose between pre or post EQ or even dry EQ while distortion is on. Compressor can be left on even when the pedal is being bypassed. Built-in noise gate. Loads of features and super self-explanatory. Bought this for my son's pedal board and I'm super impressed. If I hadn't had recently purchased a Sans Tech 21 Geddy then I'd be purchasing a second one of these units for myself. Kind of crazy what a value some of these electro-harmonix pedals are these days.

Versatile, great sounding preamp
Live I run my bass into this, then into a Tech 21 Power Engine or the PA. The EQ is versatile and sounds great, the compressor and noise gates are useful and well done, and the distortion (several voicing options) sounds really good.

Better than you've heard, Amazing for the price
You can get some decent tones out of the Battalion by itself but I had concerns about whether it would "play nice" with my other pedals, including my Deluxe Bass Big Muff. Happy to say that it works great, particularly with some careful tweaking.Clean bass and 90% of my effects sound great through it, though the treble response is very dry by default and can make my Big Muff sound sort of fizzy and screechy. Luckily, turning on the compressor and leaving it right at the minimum squeezes the treble enough to eliminate this issue, though I later found that the aggressive treble wasn't as pronounced in a proper mix.The built-in distortion is quite nice. It can be very warm and the option to blend it and switch where it falls in the signal path make it very flexible. I set mine to after the EQ and leave it on with the drive low so that it has warmth but not as much bite. Pairing this pedal with a CabSim pedal (I sometimes use a Digitech CabDryVR) can give you a more amp-like sound and it is powerful for that.Only downside? the Noise gate. Not great or even usable, honestly. I leave mine off.But for everything else, I can't recommend this thing enough. It's a ridiculously good value.

Decent for the price
I've had this unit for a few weeks now and I'd say that for the price, it's a damn good pedal. The pros are that it first and foremost breathes new life and sparkle into my rather bland amp (Hartke 3500). The eq toggle offers enough variance to taylor your tone however you hear it in your head. The drive is gritty enough to emulate an overdriven amp, but not so fuzzy you loose control of your sound. It's very natural sounding. Cons are the one knob compression. It's lacks focus and punch and frankly sounds better without it engaged. I also wish there was a cross-over ala the delux bass muff (which incidentally makes that pedal). And finally the noise gate is way too sensitive. You either have to deal with hum or have it slam shut on your whole notes and reverb. Ultimately the pros outweigh the cons though. This is a great set-it-and-forget-it pedal.

Review update
Update: first one just stopped working and warranty had expired; got this second one and now it did same thing- completely dead. I’ve read other accounts of same thing. No response from EH yet. …

Seems like a great value but received a defective unit...
I've been able to play with this for a couple of days now. This is my first DI and I love the way I can shape my tone. The distortion, compression, and noise gate are awesome additions that let me condense my board into a more manageable setup. Overall I was really stoked to find such a great package at relatively low price point!Unfortunately, the DI out already stopped working properly, and it took me a solid 2 full days before I heard back from anyone at EHX officially telling me the unit is probably defective. I'm hoping I just ended up with a fluke of a unit and I can exchange it for one that works right. Will report back and update this review if I get one that doesn't crap out on me.
