Helpful advice for Mac users
I don't normally write reviews but the instructions to activate the scan-to-network buttons (on the scanner) are nowhere to be found in the manuals or online - in fact, if you look hard enough there is a page on Brother's website that claims these buttons can't be activated on OS X 10.9 - but they can. After first trying through their email support (who are clueless) and then talking with Brother's tech support (who are actually very knowledgeable), I have figured it out. Here's how:Step 1From Control Center 2, click on the pull down menu at the top left which currently shows the model # and select the next option called "Other...". On the next screen, click the minus button to remove the scanner, and then click the plus to add it back. In the dialog to add it, click on the "Scan Key" option and give it a name - this will be used in step 3.Step 2This one IS in the manual, but it doesn't work without the other two. Click on the "Scan" tab in the in the start screen in Control Center 2. Then control click on whatever type of scanning you want to preset to one of the buttons on the device (image, OCR, email, or file). You'll need to set it on the right tab at the top of the window named "Device Button". You can set them all if you wish, but you'll only get to pick two.Step 3Final step. Now go to the "Device Settings" tab in that start screen in Control Center 2, and click on "Scan to Net Settings". This will open up a page in your default browser. On that page, "Scan to Network Device" should be highlighted on the left and you'll have two Network Devices shown - 1 & 2. These are the setting for the two buttons. The TYPE is what type of scan (image, OCR, email, file, etc) and the DESTINATION is the name you specified for the "Scan Key" in Step 1.That's it now you're done. If you ever want to change the scan type for a button you'll have to go back to Device Settings, but if you just want to edit the type you can do that from the Scan Tab in Control Center 2.Also if you don't have an optical drive (like me), you can actually download all of the drivers AND the included apps on the Brother website - you just have to look around for them.---This ridiculous setup aside, I've found the ADS1000w to be a great value - better specs than the equivalent Scansnap (wifi!) for a wonderfully affordable price.

Good compact scanner, but software is a bother to install under Windows 10.
I've used this for a week of pretty intensive scanning and can say this is a really good, inexpensive sheet feed scanner. It scans both sides in one pass and does so pretty quickly. The sheet feeder is a bit fussy at times, but generally accepts widely different length and width paper with ease. When it jams, recovery is easy. The resulting PDF file is clear and a reasonable size.So why 4 stars? Two reasons: Automatic sheet feeder a bit tricky to use and software a bother to install. The sheet feeder shifts the page it is about to scan a little crooked to get it started and sometimes it shifts it too far. I try to put the paper in as straight as possible, but sometimes things just go wrong. Maybe one time in 50 sheets. Put the same sheets back in, and things work fine.I am running Windows 10 and the included software did not install easily. It hung a few times and I had to reboot my computer. I really expected I would have to return this because I could not get the software to install. Despite all that, when I was done I tried the software anyway and seemed to work just fine. All I want to do is scan groups of pages into one PDF and this scanner does that easily.

Thorough Review: Speed, features, wireless, and size.
Scans super fast, ADF(automatic document feeder) works great, paper should be straight without crumbled edges to ensure good feed scans. Stand-alone product can scan directly to USB drive(not provided) or a running computer. This model does not scan to email or ftp as a stand-alone...to scan to email or ftp you'll need to use the provided software on your computer to do so. (this is important to know as I thought differently when I purchased, but still rated 5 stars based on it's other options). To setup the item, I used a wireless laptop with a usb connected for preliminary setup. The software found the unit, found the wireless SSID name, and applied my settings to the device. From my Windows 7 desktop and Windows 8 laptops it found the device rather easily as well (once it was connected to the wireless network). For example (Windows 7) You just go to "Start" ->"control panel" -> "View devices and printers" -> "add a device" -> "find the ADS-1000W" and add it. Then use the software in the package or your own favorite software to scan and create PDF's, JPGs etc.Speed: When scanning black and white images over the wireless the sheets feed through super quick and it gets transmitted to the computer or usb stick(not provided) very quick too... Business speed ready in my opinion. As for full hi-resolution color, it scans a bit slower(but still fast compared to others) but it transmits over the wireless a little too slow due to the size of the PDF or JPG it's transmitting over your wireless network. If you're scanning 2 or 3 hi-res images the time to transmit it to your computer via wireless is tolerable, but if you plan on scanning 10 to 15 hi-res images/documents to one PDF, plugging in the direct USB connection might be your best bet. (I didn't try the 10 to 15 hi-res documents to test out the speed, I'm only estimating based on the 2 hi-res color documents time to transmit over wirreless to my PC.)I've personally tested this device on Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8 Standard and used 1 gig USB drive for direct scanning in stand-alone mode. (stand-alone mode meaning no computer necessary) ONE MORE GREAT FEATURE: when scanning to a LOCAL USB drive in stand-alone mode, the scanner scans both sides of the document at once which SAVES huge amounts of time on duplex documents. The unit is perfect desktop size. The paper feeder has hinges which allows it to fold down and close up to a small rectangular box (great for travel or just desk space savings) which automatically tells the device to go in standby mode. Also, when you unfold the paper feeder, it has two extra supports that extend the paper feeder another 6 inches beyond what the stock picture shows which gives the paper more support when you have a larger stack of 8.5 x 11. This extension allows for better paper support to keep the papers straight while being fed into the machine. This model DOES not have a LCD digital display (another model above this I think does, but it's not necessary), It has a smooth touch pad like a laptop that has 6 static icons that light up for different functions (like scan directly to usb, start scan, scan to pc1,scan to pc2, stop scan, usb is connected).Sheet feeder holds 20 sheets I think the specs say so if you scan a large number of documents then you might want to look at the 50 sheet feeder option on another Brother model. For small contracts and home documents it works perfect. They also include a clear "wrapping sheet" that is used to scan different sized items such a receipts. This clear sheet keeps small receipts from getting jammed. I also noticed on the back it has a place to scan cards like licenses, business cards etc. I haven't tried that option yet though.Overall great product with business like speed, great options, great quality in a small compact unit.

A good product with crapy documentation and poor support. the support that tries to upsell higher models.
The product setup documentation is poor. That is why most people who try to install this product return the product. initially tried to install the wifi, could not, then hooked the usb cable, the usb driver was not recognized, and it looked like it was not installed. then it pop-up. Now I tried to install the wifi. the setup guides for wps (encryption process) key setup. I am using a newer router which does not have the wps support. no button to press. being an IT expert myself, i was able to figure out and used the advanced method to configure. So far so good. the scanner is configured, scanned the document using control center. Next step was to try to use the button to scan to pc. Did not work. went to brother support on chat, and I was told oh this product does not support the button scan, that is supported by out next higher model, I need to upgrade. Instead of providing proper support the support sent my request to sales and they sent me offer to upgrade to next model. The support mention that this product does not have the feature to press the scan button to scan to pc. I received email from team lead with the upgrade offerI figured out that the support was useless. I am IT expert and thinking what will happen with a person with basic computer skills. they will never be able to configure this with wifi setup with newer routers. The ADS1000W has a feature to scan to usb. I tested that and it worked and gave me confidence that there is touch sensor on the scanner. two step process. first touch the usb led (select) and the touch the green led. This proved that the Brother support was wrong and the scan (button) sensor was working. next I hooked up a USB cable and now the USB led light was on. I had to re-configure for USB. I touch the usb led and then the green led and the scanner scanned to PCLater I disconnected my current brother network multi function printer and reconfigured the scanner for wifi. now the pc1 led light came up. This time I touched the pc1 led and then the green led and the document was scanned to pc.The scanner works however being poor documentation and poor support, a person with basic computer skills will not be able to configure. there are lot of steps missing in the setup instructions for wifi setup. poor support. the support that tries to upsell higher models. it seemed that they had no idea of the product line. and they have no phone number, the computer has to be rebooted and the support agent is lost, next connection a new agent comes in who has no clue and wants to start from zero.In summary, I will only suggest this product if you have good knowledge about the network setup or some one is going to help you.

Does what it should. Great small device to backup and file important documents.
Very practical machine to keep electronic versions and backups of important documents. Sometimes, it's hard to scan that were previously folded with perfect alignment. I like that it doesn't take much place on the desk while folded. Two things keep me from giving a perfect five stars: 1) A receiving tray for scanned documents would be nice. Once scanned, documents can become tangled or fall off the table. Something could be done about this in the design, I think. 2) The software provided with the scanner is far from being perfect. One thing that I really dislike (amongst other that I won't list unless I'm asked) is the fact that documents scanned wirelessly just drop in a folder on the computer with out prompting the software window. In particular, this means you have to go back and rename every file scanned wirelessly in Windows Explorer. It would be so nice if the formating window would pop up and give me the same options as when I prompt the scan directly from the computer.

I love this thing when it is working
I love this thing when it is working. It doesn't jam often and you can scan a large number of papers quickly. But whenever I change my WiFi password or try to take it from home to work, it is a huge pain to set up. Also this scanner works well for documents but not pictures as it can leave artifacts on images.
