French Baroque Music Edition / Various

The disc of earliest music here is by harpist Andrew Lawrence-King and it blew me away. Especially Louis Couperin' six and a half minute long Passacaille which I'd never heard before. There's another full disc of Louis C's harpsichord music all beautifully played by the inestimable Gustave Leonhardt. And Antoine Forqueray's Pieces de Violes and de Clavecin (Jay Bernfeld, Skip Skempe) are also delights. Louis' nephew Francois was the greater composer and we get a gorgeous sample of his chamber work here from The Smithsonian Chamber Players --the best recording I know of his Four Concerts Royaux. This is music beyond elegance into deep emotion. Lully's Divertissement are also gorgeous and unique --in three parts, some dozen songs by mezzo Guilemette Laurens with the Capriccio Stravagante. Skip Sempe is on clavecin again for some intermission works for that instrument. La Petite Bande's recording of Rameau's Pygmalion ballet has been played often on my turntable and then cassette players. It's a keeper. They also do a great job with suites from another excellent Rameau opera Hippolyte et Aricie. I'm still listenig to a 3rd disc of opera suites by him by the Collegium Aurem from the great Les Indes Galante and Dardanus.Two more operas in extended excerpts are Lully's The Bourgeois Gentleman and Campra's L'Europe Galante also by La Petite Bande. This is a feast of French Baroque music I won't tire of anytime soon.

Deutsch Harmonia Mundi (through Sony, their parents) has been steadily releasing these wonderful boxes of eight to ten discs from the DHM catalog, grouped roughly by some underlying theme. I've bought about a dozen of these DHM boxes over the past year (most reviewed elsewhere), and this one fits in the series about specific country baroque music. There's no shortage of material for French baroque, either (although the title is a bit misleading in that this covers pre-baroque as well).Most of the composers on these ten discs will be familiar to baroque lovers: there's Couperin, Rameau, and Lully, of course, but there's also Forqueray (someone I had never heard before) and a mixed-composer disc with others. The Couperin is keyboard work, played by Leonhardt), and some orchestral. The Rameau and Lully are orchestral. Lully, of course, is best know for his choral work, but there's more of his occasional music here.All the discs are superbly mastered, as you would expect from DHM, and the performances are excellent. With a few of these DHM boxes, after one or two discs a session I start to lose attention, having to come back to them later. I didn't get any listener fatigue at all with the discs in this box, and thoroughly enjoyed all ten discs. While the French may not be what comes to mind when you think of baroque (surely Germany and England would be at the forefront), this box shows just how talented the French composers of the time were. Very nicely done.
