Belkin WeMo Switch & Motion Sensor (Bundle No Longer Sold by Manufacturer) (Discontinued by Manufacturer)

I am very aggravated with this product and the after the purchase customer service. The switch quit working after about 2 months and while at my second property winterizing for the winter I called a tech support at belkin, I explained to him the problems that I was having and that the switch was no longer working. The hardest thing was the language barrier, I had to keep repeating myself over and over and trying to get him to understand that the unit was a switch + motion. I was not sure if the motion portion would continue working if I brought the switch portion home with me and I wanted to keep the motion portion working because at least I would get alerts if there was motion at my property. I explained to him that I lived 200 miles away and that it would be a long drive for me to come back and get the switch if I needed to return it. He processed a return authorization number for me but in order for me to get specific instructions about the return I needed to call them the next business day during their open hours and give them this authorization number, well by this time I was home and I had left the switch at my property 200 miles away. They did replace the switch but it did take a couple weeks to get it and they only give you a month from the time you start the return process to get the old unit back to them otherwise they charge your credit card full purchase price and supposedly refund you the money after they receive the product back. This does not sit well with me because I was the one who was being inconvenienced and Belkin was not doing anything in my favor other than replacing the switch. Yesterday I drove to the property and picked up the defective unit and it is sitting here to be returned so we will see how the rest of this process unfolds but I don't think I will be doing business with Belkin or purchasing another we move product after this.FYI...I also have a defective dropcam and dropcam (now nest) is sending me a new unit, paying the return postage and giving me a 10.00 credit. Yes also said they understand that my property is 200 miles away and to just let them know if I would need more time to get the defective device returned to them. Just a little "plug" for dropcam.

I have a bunch of Wemo light switches installed at my house so I figured why not give this package a try. My biggest gripe is with the switch as it makes this high pitched squealing noise when plugged in. It has done this since the day I got it and plugged it in. Doesn't matter if the device is on or off. I used it with a space heater in my theater room above the garage so I could warm it up in the winter before heading up there. I have a Holmes WeMo heater on the way for next winter so I will retire this unless I can find a use for it in the garage or somewhere else that the noise will not be such an annoyance. Next time I have a possible use for one of these I will try the insight model instead.Note: my hearing range may be higher than the average person as I also cannot drive my wife's 2008 Toyata Corolla as it makes almost the exact same noise ever since it was recalled for a pedal problem years ago. I complained to the dealer but they insisted they do not hear it and neither does my wife.As for the motion sensor, I have this on my entry way table and it works fine but I never really found a use for it.

Since posting my initial review of this product on 8 May, Belkin tech support reached out to me (and I give them credit for their persistence) with additional suggestions to attempt getting the product to work. I've now tested and gotten it to work in two different environments. However, in continuing to troubleshoot the problems setting this up, I found that in both cases I had to use a second wireless network that ran off 802.11g routers as opposed to the 802.11n routers I was attempting to connect through initially.The fact that it took two different routers and two separate wireless networks, plus hours and hours of troubleshooting, to get this working at all is not good. However, once the WeMo app on my Android phone was finally able to detect the WeMo devices, I was able to get them to function as advertised, which admittedly is pretty neat.

I use it at the bottom of my stairs so that when I walk by at night it turns on my lap by my bed for 15 min.. absolutely love the WeMo products! the app is easy to use and it's one of the few that you can control outside of your own wifi network when you leave your house. (and even have fun with friends or family if they have a good sense of humor too when they are at your house and you aren't) :)The motion sensor is sitting on my floor and does not seem to "see" my cat except when he walks practically on top of it. It does however "see" my dog most of the time, and always sees me. in case anyone was wondering. it has a good length of cord so that it can be placed away from the base that is plugged into the wall. I also like that you can say "if it senses motion, turn on "A for 15 min", and off "B' and on "C for 5 min" it allows for a lot of customization. I'm always on the lookout for something that I can combine everything into, but haven't found it.. but... the WeMo is a great product and it's one I don't think I will abandon anytime soon (been using them for 3 years now) ..the light switch is great too by the way.. and very easy to install, same as any other light switch, but with exact, step by step directions)

Motion detector does not always detect motion it should be able to detect.

Use this to turn lights on/off in living room. The app is OK, could be more reliable though.The first unit worked for about a day and then stopped appearing in the app. Returned for free, got full refund, ordered another unit. Second unit works good since then.
